The University of Kentucky Board of Trustees has selected the University of Alabama Birmingham's provost, Eli Capilouto, as its preferred candidate to replace Lee T. Todd, Jr. as president.
"We couldn't be more happy with this selection," Dr. Britt Brockman, chairman of the UK Board of Trustee said after the board's vote. "You'll find that University of Alabama (Birmingham) has made great strides nationally. They've taken basically a very hospital oriented university and over the last decade at the request of their board of trustees gone into make sure undergraduate education is as strong as the hospital side of the university."
That was a large determining factor in the board's decision, Brockman said, as they are looking to bridge the "lost middle ground with the silos between the hospital and the athletics and that is the core of our university, the undergraduate education."
Capilouto said his time at UAB, where he and his wife served for a time as deans of different schools, has taught him how bringing together groups within the university can help achieve great gains.
