The University of Washington Board of Regents unanimously voted Monday morning to hire Michael Young as the university's new president.
Young, 61, has been president of the University of Utah since 2004.
The decision is subject to negotiating an employment agreement.
"Setting aside his tremendous academic credentials, I think he will be well-suited for the faculty," said Board Chairman Herb Simon, citing Young's patient demeanor and intellect.
Young is scheduled to start in the post on July 1.
UW officials had been tight-lipped about their search and their choice. On Friday, when the agenda for the Regents meeting was released, officials would only say that an announcement would come Monday.
Simon did say "the university family and external community will be very happy with the name brought forth."
