Chancellor Eric D. Fingerhut announced this morning that he will step down as Ohio's higher-education chief in March - a year before his five-year appointment is up.
Fingerhut said Gov. John Kasich did not ask him to leave, but that the two of them worked together to pick the right time for him to depart.
"I made it clear to Gov. Kasich that I did not intend to seek reappointment next year at the end of my term because it is time for me to pursue other opportunities for myself and my family," Fingerhut told The Dispatch.
He said he doesn't know what he is going to do yet, but would like to stay in higher education.
Fingerhut, 51, said he felt it was important to give Kasich enough time to appoint a replacement before the governor unveiled his budget recommendations in March to help ensure a smooth transition.
