Just months removed from public office, former New York Governor David Paterson is going back to school.
Paterson announced on Thursday that he will join the NYU politics faculty. College of Arts and Science dean Matthew Santirocco said Paterson will join the CAS faculty as a distinguished public leader in residence.
Santirocco said Paterson will teach a freshman honors seminar next fall.
"He has not yet decided what he will teach, though he and I are working together on possible topics concerning politics and/or state governance," Santirocco said.
Politics professor Lawrence Mead said Paterson will fill a crucial role on staff.
"He meets a real need — we don't have anyone teaching state and local government in the politics department," Mead said. "We could use someone in the field. Paterson is obviously well-informed about this, having just been governor of New York. Also, he is a particular expert on a major crisis facing the state right now, which is the budget problem."
