Linwood H. Rose, who has spent most of his career building the reputation of James Madison University in Harrisonburg, announced Wednesday that he will retire as president in June 2012.
"What a place to build a life and a career," Rose said at a news conference on campus. Rose, who came to JMU as assistant director of residence halls in 1975, has been president since 1998.
He vowed there would be "no winding down" as his tenure as JMU's fifth president draws to an end, saying he announced his plans now so the university would have sufficient time to find a new president.
