The Yavapai College District Governing Board Tuesday afternoon accepted Dr. James Horton's resignation as college president, effective Dec. 31.
Horton has served as Yavapai College's president for five years.
"I have been a college president or CEO for 29 years," Horton said. "At this time in my career and my age, 67, it is time to retire."
Horton has agreed to stay on at YC into 2011 as the governing board searches for a new president.
The district governing board authorized board chair Dr. Patricia McCarver to negotiate a contract with Educational Services Inc. for Horton's services on a month-to-month basis.
YC Board Secretary and spokesperson Herald Harrington said the board would conduct a national search for a new president.
"We would hope to take three or four months to find a replacement for Dr. Horton," Harrington noted. "During our December meeting, we will lay out our plans for the search process. The process will include a search committee consisting of individuals from the community and internal individuals."
