Texas Woman’s University officials announced Thursday that Robert Neely will be the new provost and vice president for academic affairs starting Jan. 3.
Neely, who has a doctorate in botany from Iowa State University, currently serves as associate provost and associate vice president for research at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Mich.
“I kind of consider myself almost an academic brat,” Neely said, pointing out that both of his parents worked in academics.
Looking back, he said he is not surprised that his career has included a variety of positions at universities, including experience as a biology professor, department head for biology and associate dean for the College of Arts and Sciences at Eastern Michigan.
His broad background is one of the qualities that stood out to the search committee, said Don Edwards, who was the committee’s chairman.
“He has just demonstrated excellence in all those positions,” said Edwards, an associate dean of TWU’s College of Arts and Sciences.
