Caroline Osborne to lead library at Washington and Lee law school

Washington and Lee Law School

September 21, 2010

Washington and Lee School of Law Dean Mark Grunewald today announced the appointment of Caroline L. Osborne as Director of the Law Library and Professor of Legal Research. Osborne has served as interim director of the library for the last year.
One of the most critical positions in any law school, the library director at W&L oversees an operations and information budget of over 1 million dollars and supervises a staff of thirteen.

"We are fortunate to have someone of Caroline's talent, creativity and commitment fill this vital position in the Law School," said Dean Mark Grunewald. "I look forward to the continued success of the Library program under her leadership."

Osborne joined Washington and Lee in 2007 as a research and instructional services librarian and lecturer in law. Since 2008, she also has directed the Burks Scholars legal research program, which introduces first-year students to the rigors of legal writing and research.

As interim director, Osborne has overseen the modernization of the library's circulation system and an enhancement of the main library reading room. In addition, Osborne guided the vast expansion of online information resources available for students and faculty through innovative arrangements with Thomson-Rueters, Bloomberg and Wolters Kluwer.

"The library landscape is evolving from a predominantly print-based focus to a collection composed of print and online resources available at anytime from anywhere," said Osborne. "The immediate focus of the library is providing new and innovative services for faculty and students, continuing to find new opportunities for student work spaces within the library, and seeing the Law Library Fellow program implemented to its fullest potential."

Osborne has held library positions at the University of Richmond School of Law and the University of North Carolina School of Law. Prior to entering academia, Osborne practiced law for ten years in the area of corporate finance in North Carolina, Georgia and New York.
