Stuart Steiner has fond memories of coming to Genesee Community College to help open the school in Batavia in 1967.
First as dean of students and — for the past 35 years — as president of this community college, Steiner has played a key role in developing this institution of higher leaning from a storefront operation to a thriving college.
On Friday, Steiner, 73, announced that this coming school year will be his last as president. The American Association of Community Colleges says Steiner’s tenure is one of the longest it has seen.
Steiner said that his wife, Rosalie, who died in 2008 of a stroke, had once told him that he should retire at the peak of his career.
The college’s trustees recently said that this past school year was among the school’s most successful.
“That triggered what Roz said. I told them I would give them one more year and step aside,” Steiner said.
