Former NFL quarterback and president of the Houston Dynamo soccer franchise Oliver Luck was named athletic director at West Virginia University on Thursday and will start work for his alma mater July 1.
President James Clements announced Luck's appointment, calling him "the clear choice to carry forward."
Luck will earn a base salary of $390,000, an amount Clements said was "right in line with his peers" and just $60,000 less then the president himself earns. A copy of Luck's contract was to be released later Thursday.
"He is a true leader, a strategic thinker," Clements said. "In my eyes, everything he touches turns to gold, and he is a great fit for our great university."
The 50-year-old Luck replaces longtime director Ed Pastilong, who is retiring June 30 but will serve as athletic director emeritus through 2012.
Luck said it's a particularly challenging time to accept the job because of rumors about conference realignments and other "chess moves" in intercollegiate athletics, but he said he will work to protect West Virginia and to ensure it has the right affiliations.
