In another personnel move following last week's shake up, South Carolina State University on Monday announced the appointment of Dr. Valerie S. Fields as interim vice president for student affairs.
"Dr. Valerie Fields is and has been a tremendous asset to S.C. State University," President George E. Cooper said in a release. "Dr. Fields has many years of experience in the realm of student affairs and we are more than happy that she will return to the university in this capacity.
"We expect that Dr. Fields will actively lead the student affairs area, and assist in growing our relationship with the community and in the recruitment of students, gradually increasing university enrollment."
A high-level university source, who asked not to be identified, said eight employees were fired Friday, including Police Chief Michael Bartley, Chief of Staff and General Counsel Ed Givens and Vice President of Student Affairs Charles Smith.
The university has not announced who left, only that "personnel changes" were made amid an internal investigation into "certain policies and practices of the university."
On Saturday, the university announced former assistant chief of police and major Kenneth "Mac" McCaster was appointed to serve as interim police chief.
