Definition
Under general supervision, the Writing Center Graduate Tutor provides instructional assistance and support tasks related to the Writing Center in accordance with assignments and directions from the Writing Coordinator, a course instructor or other academic personnel; provides technical assistance to students, faculty, and staff in the use of material that supports all areas of instruction; monitors and reports student progress; maintains the hardware and software for the Writing Center programs on the network.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This is a very narrow classification in the instructional assistance area. Positions assigned to the class of Writing Center Graduate Tutor perform duties to assist and support a classroom instructor or other academic personnel. Specific tasks may vary depending upon the needs of the students and their classroom assignments.

Positions in this class are expected to be in the Writing Center. Incumbents in the class of WCGT are expected to have completed a minimum of four years of college with a major in English or Literature.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:Assist students with the assignments related to writing. Assist in the preparation of activities related to the student writing assignments. Provide basic writing guidance in a variety of general subject areas. Recommend appropriate instructional materials and technology to be used by students; develop, modify, and test instructional material to ensure activities are current, accurate, and relevant in accordance with instructor's curriculum guidelines. Review educational material and provide recommendations as needed to enhance instruction. Provide assistance to students regarding various aspects of Writing Center courses. Respond to student questions and provide information regarding resources available to students about writing. Assist instructors in preparation of manuals, handouts, and training/teaching materials. Ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and priorities related to use of the Writing Center material. Maintain accurate records. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:Instructional practices, as they relate to writing. Student guidance principles and practices. Community college curriculum and educational requirements. Computer software and hardware utilized in instruction. Principles and procedures of record keeping. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and consideration.
Ability to:Provide assistance and technical advice regarding writing to students. Assess student achievement and encourage student participation. Respond to questions and assist students as needed, utilizing search engines and various technical websites to troubleshoot issues on behalf of students/faculty when the answer is not already known. Maintain accurate records. Work independently in the absence of supervision. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, including individuals from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic and disability backgrounds.Education and Experience:Completion of four years of college with major course work in English, Literature, or related field. Two years of experience in an instructional setting as a tutor or in a similar position pertaining to writing. Familiarity with Learning Management Systems: Blackboard Learn, Canvas. Or, any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities.LICENSES OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Some positions in this classification may require a valid California driver's license and/or possession of a certificate of completion from an accredited college or agency in relative to the assigned area.

Conditions of Employment
OPEN UNTIL FILLED.

Employment is on a part-time, temporary basis and contingent upon verification of employment history, background verification as governed under Education Code requirements, eligibility to work in the United States, and approval by the CCCD Board of Trustees. Short term/temporary assignments do not offer fringe benefits or pay for holidays or time not worked and are limited to 28 hours per week.

This is a short-term, CONTINUOUS recruitment for an applicant POOL to fill part-time, temporary, hourly assignments on an as-needed basis. We accept applications all year long.
