Senior Vice Provost for Student Success
The Senior Vice Provost for Student Success will provide leadership and vision in administering a comprehensive portfolio of strategic initiatives that promote an exceptional student experience (recruitment, enrollment, onboarding, and learning) and enhance the student life experience at UMKC. Successful candidates will be visionary influencers who can effectively contribute to the successful attainment of strategic priorities, and will work collaboratively with faculty and staff to meet UMKC’s goals for retention, persistence, and timely degree completion, aligned with our mission as a public urban research university.
The Senior Vice Provost for Student Success reports to the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor with a dotted reporting line to the Chancellor. This inaugural position is an integral part of the Provost’s senior leadership team, and must work effectively across administrative and academic units of the university to accomplish our goals and objectives. More importantly, this is a transformational opportunity for a student success professional with a deep commitment to inclusive excellence and partnerships with the academic programs to join the leadership team of an ambitious and student-focused Provost.
The portfolio of the Senior Vice Provost for Student Success include: Enrollment Management (Student Recruitment, Admissions, Financial Aid, and Orientation), Undergraduate Academic Advising (consolidation of cross campus advising staff into central unit), Career Services, Academic Support (Supplemental Instruction, Writing Studio, and Tutoring), Summer Bridge, Financial Management/Education Center and Graduation Help Desk.
General responsibilities for this position include:
Achieving the University's student success goals as outlined in the UMKC Strategic Plan
Achieving the University’s student enrollment growth goals as outlined in the UMKC Strategic Plan
Incorporating diversity, inclusion and equity principles in student success efforts in order to implement UMKC’s mission and vision
Creating, revising, implementing, assessing, and reporting outcomes of student success initiatives and related programs
Leading the development of high quality programs and institution-wide initiatives to enhance student engagement on campus and to improve student persistence and completion
Developing a culture that is based on growth mindset, is data-informed, and committed to continuous improvement
Remaining current regarding research, national trends, and best practices associated with student retention, completion and engaged learning
Overseeing periodic assessments of students and constituent groups’ perceptions toward achieving student success
Using data to assess the delivery quality of quality programs and services and ensure efficient use of institutional resources
Collaborating with faculty and leaders across the university to interpret data in planning and decision-making in order to influence and improve the student experience and student success
Building and maintaining strong cross-campus relationships with faculty and staff in support of student success
Providing unit leadership in hiring, development and evaluation of all staff reporting to this position
Partnering across the university to create a culture of care for students and colleagues
Committing to UMKC’s stated campus values and institutional mission

Specific immediate responsibilities of this position include:
Reorganize and establish a centralized, caseload-based academic advising model that effectively utilizes standardized, proactive and targeted outreach to undergraduate students, client-centered practices, performance-based annual evaluations, and career-ladder opportunities for academic advising staff
Create a virtual, one-stop Graduation Help Desk that works with leaders in academic units and academic advising to assist undergraduate students in resolving roadblocks to timely graduation, as well as to identify common institutional barriers impacting timely graduation
Build a Financial Management/Education Center to provide financial literacy education and counseling to students and offer community outreach programs to middle and high school students in the Kansas-City metro area, as well as develop, implement and monitor an early alert system for financial-risk to better predict, identify and successfully intervene with students in need of financial assistance early on in their academic career
Work with the Office of Planning, Analysis and Decision Support to analyze and report on student success initiatives, and to build real-time dashboards that track enrollment, retention, persistence, graduation rates, SCH completion, etc. on a daily basis
Implement and regularly convene a University Student Success Advisory Board that includes leaders in Academic Affairs, Student Success, Student Affairs, and Business Affairs, working in partnership to address policies, procedures, workflow processes, and student success efforts that better serve the needs of UMKC students
Address challenges with technology tools that support student recruitment, enrollment, persistence, completion and alumni learner engagement
Coordinate the offering of retention grants for juniors/seniors who are on track to graduate but experience financial barriers to degree completion
Enhance onboarding practices and expand Summer Bridge programming for first-year students
Scale-up, maintain and monitor a robust classroom-to-career experiential learning initiative, through partnerships with Career Services and the academic programs, which expands the use of e-portfolios to track experiential learning opportunities and marketable skills acquisition
Scale-up the use of predictive analytics tools (Civitas Illume, Civitas Impact, Civitas Clear Scholar) with a campaign of personalized nudges for key student demographic groups by identifying and/or reexamining success marker/critical courses that are pivotal to degree completion
Partner with senior leadership team to design and implement programs to address barrier or challenge courses for students, experiential learning, block scheduling and support for the First Semester Experience course
Partner with the Dean of Students in creating and maintaining Centers for First-Generation students, Transfer students and Veterans that provide specialized support programs to these important student groups
Earned Doctorate or terminal degree, with tenure line negotiable for qualified candidates
At least 5 years of demonstrated success in leading student success initiatives at the College/University level
Successful leadership and management experience in higher education
Understanding of higher education culture and practice
Successful College/University teaching experience
Excellent organizational skills
Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
Experience collaborating with diverse stakeholders
At least 10 years of demonstrated successful leadership at the College/University level
Demonstrated successful experience leading University student success initiatives with identified target metrics
Demonstrated successful experience using data to support work focused on improving student success for all student groups
