About the Position

 
The Division of Student Affairs provides a vibrant campus life and vital student services which directly contribute to student success at SJSU for our diverse student population. The division includes 20 departments, 400 staff and an operating budget of $75M.  Student Affairs supports over 350 student organizations, encompassing the diversity of our student body and giving students an opportunity to find a sense of place and purpose. Student Affairs enhances the student experience by providing leadership opportunities to foster a connection with our campus and community. The Associate Vice President for Student Affairs (AVP) reports to the Vice President for Student Affairs and provides leadership, vision, and administrative oversight for six functional areas consisting of approximately 130 staff members: Accessible Educational Center (including Center for Accessible Technology), Career Center, Counseling Services, Military & Veteran Student Services, University Ombudsman, and Student Health Center (including Wellness & Health Promotion). This position assists the VPSA with the overall management, planning, administration, and evaluation of the division's programs, services, personnel, policies, procedures, facilities and budgets, and provides leadership in the design and implementation of coordinated campus/division-wide initiatives.  The AVP works closely with direct reports to develop and assess learning and developmental outcomes as well as service-delivery and standards, and provides consultation that focuses on high quality, student-centered approaches, trends, and best practices. Additionally, the AVP provides visionary leadership in building collaborative partnerships with campus and community constituents to foster access, student engagement, retention, and deep commitment to student success. The AVP partners with university stakeholders to promote co-curricular learning, inclusive excellence, and a campus community that welcomes and supports diverse perspectives. This position represents the university and division on internal and external committees and serves on the division management teams.



Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

- Serve as second-in-command for the Vice President for Student Affairs and as acting Vice President when the Vice President is absent.

- Provides direct supervision, hiring, training, and evaluation for five directors (MPPs), one program director (SSPIV), and an administrative analyst responsible for a broad portfolio of student support, services, and programs in six (6) functional areas: Accessible Education Center (including Center for Accessible Technology), Career Center, Counseling Services, Military & Veteran Student Services, University Ombudsperson, and Student Health Center (including Wellness & Health Promotion).  

- Provides fiscal oversight and establishment of priorities for multiple budgets in excess of $12 million; encourages departments to seek other funding sources to augment programs and services.

- Develops and oversees operational and strategic planning efforts that fulfill the mission of the Division and enhancement of the college experience for students. 

- Participates as a key member of the VPSA Council and the Student Affairs Leadership Team (SALT). 

- Chairs the Outstanding Graduating Senior Awards Committee and serve on the Behavioral Crisis Intervention Team (BCIT)

- Advises the VP, increase divisional effectiveness and efficiency, serve as a visible and vocal leader on campus and its surrounding community, and create strategies to propel the division forward

- Serves as Coordinator for California State University Super Sunday program and the African American Initiative including the annual College-Readiness Project



This is a position in the CSU - Management Personnel Plan (MPP), and serves at the pleasure of the President. This position may also require adherence to University compliance training such as: Conflict of Interest and Ethics, AB 1825 Sexual Harassment Prevention, Information Security, and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. The person hired for this position will be required to complete an outside employment disclosure statement in accordance with Title V of the California Code of Regulations.

 

 


 

 


 
Education and Experience

 
- Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Personnel, Counseling, or an appropriate area of specialization

- Seven (7) years of progressive responsible experience in a managerial role in a related field

- Five (5) years of experience managing professional staff 

- Experience in leadership, budget management, strategic planning, personnel, problem solving, oral and written communication skills, including correspondence, reports, presentation, and policy manuals

- Experience working with first-generation, diverse college students and staff

- Experience collaborating across institutional lines, particularly with faculty/Academic Affairs leadership

- Experience in assessing student service activities using assessment results to make changes in service delivery to students

 

 


 

 


 
Preferred Qualifications

 
- Earned doctorate in closely related field

- Experience in a collective bargaining environment

 

 


 

 


 
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

 
- Demonstrated experience of progressively responsible administration in Student Affairs at the university level, preferably at a metropolitan university.

- Demonstrated experience in leadership, professional staff supervision, budget management, strategic planning, personnel, problem solving, oral and written communication skills including business correspondence, reports, presentations and policy manuals.

- Demonstrated success in developing and carrying out assessment of strategic goals and evidence of a strong background in data-informed decision making.

- Demonstrated ability and commitment to establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships within a diverse, multicultural environment.

- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, particularly in the areas of giving vision and direction to staff and working effectively with internal and external constituents.

- Demonstrated knowledge of student development theories relevant to a metropolitan university, appropriate best practices, and demonstrated sensitivity and understanding of the needs of a large and diverse student body.

- Demonstrated commitment to collaborative teamwork across academic and student affairs divisions, as well as other divisions, to build a sound campus environment for all.

- Demonstrated ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, faculty, staff, students, media, and community members.
