Position Summary
The Department of Atmospheric Science, Environmental Science, and Physics at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) in San Antonio, Texas, invites applications for the tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Meteorology/Atmospheric Science beginning in August 2023. UIW is recognized as a Hispanic-serving institution under federal guidelines and includes a diverse community that serves a large population of underrepresented groups including minority and female students. The successful candidate will support the meteorology program and department with effective teaching, establishment of a research program that involves undergraduates and actively contributes to community outreach initiatives. A strong commitment to the success and growth of the UIW Meteorology/Atmospheric Science program is expected. Faculty members at the University are evaluated in teaching, scholarship, service, and professional activities for tenure and/or promotion.
Full-time faculty at UIW are expected to teach four courses in the fall semester and four courses in the spring semester. In all matters, faculty are expected to maintain the highest standards of professional ethics consistent with the UIW Mission.
This position is considered a “Responsible Employee” under Title IX federal regulations and “Mandatory Reporter” under Texas state law and the UIW Sexual Misconduct Policy. As a Mandatory Reporter, this position requires you as the employee to promptly report any incident that you witness or receive information about Title IX violations. These reporting responsibilities are set out in the UIW Sexual Misconduct Policy. 
Essential Functions
Official duties and responsibilities of faculty members at UIW include teaching, scholarship, professional activities, and service.
  • Primarily teach undergraduate meteorology and/or physics and/or geology lectures and corresponding laboratories; teach other departmental courses pursuant to departmental needs;
  • Maintain appropriate weekly office hours for student questions;
  • Advise and mentor meteorology/atmospheric science majors;
  • Develop curriculum in meteorology/atmospheric science if needed;
  • Maintain an ongoing and active research agenda in your area of expertise as required for obtaining tenure status with the university;
  • Establish an active undergraduate research program;
  • Actively submit grant proposals for academic research;
  • Provide service to the department, college, university, community, and profession;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to teach undergraduate lectures and laboratories in meteorology, and/or physics, and/or geology for both meteorology majors and for non-majors;
  • Effective instructional delivery; ability to actively engage students in the learning process;
  • Strong commitment to the success and growth of the UIW Meteorology/Atmospheric Science program;
  • Excellent communication and strong interpersonal skills;
  • Proficiency in use of instructional technology;
  • Ability to work collaboratively, collegially, and productively within the university community;
  • Ability to conduct respectful relationships with students both in and outside the classroom. 
  • Ability to maintain an active research program that involves undergraduates;
  • Work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures;
  • Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference and the NCAA.
Required Education
Ph.D. in Meteorology/Atmospheric Science or a closely related field by date of assignment.
Required Work Experience
  • At least one (1) year of experience teaching meteorology, atmospheric science, or a closely related discipline at the undergraduate level;
  • Demonstrated record of ongoing research and publications (within the last 3 years) specific to your area of expertise.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching a diverse population of students, including first-time in college students from underserved populations, at the undergraduate level, and using computers and advanced technology to enhance the educational experience;
  • Postdoctoral training;
  • Experience as an undergraduate research mentor;
  • Successful grant proposals from nationally reputed funding agencies;
  • Knowledge of Geographical Information Systems and/or Environmental Impact Assessment/Remediation;
  • Active AMS Certified Consulting Meteorologists or an AMS Certified Broadcast Meteorologist certificate;
  • 18 graduate hours of physics coursework.
