We are currently seeking a curious, team-oriented and driven Research Technician to join the lab of Prof. Stephen Bell at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  The Bell Lab uses a combination of biochemistry, genetics, genomics and molecular biology to uncover mechanisms responsible for the accurate and regulated duplication of eukaryotic chromosomes.  More information can be found on their website .

As a member of the research staff, you will be assisting other members in the lab with ongoing biochemical studies including the development of novel single-molecule approaches, with the potential to pursue an independent project.  This position provides an excellent opportunity for scientific learning and the development of research skills for a recent graduate or a more experienced applicant – along with one on one mentoring with Dr. Bell.  We are ideally targeting someone who is self-driven, with a desire to work in a close-knit environment with the larger lab team, and a thirst for knowledge and development.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and analyze purified proteins for biochemical studies
  • Develop new protocols to fluorescently label proteins
  • Work with graduate students and postdoctoral fellows on research projects
  • Prepare general lab stocks
  • Assist with managing laboratory safety program
  • Support the ordering and receiving of laboratory supplies and reagents
  • Participate in laboratory meetings and read literature applicable to the research area
  • Help with lab organization and other support duties relating to lab operations, as required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • Prior experience working in a research laboratory
  • Understanding and experience with protein purification
  • Prior experience and understanding of biochemical research work
    • Extensive biochemical experience is a strong plus
    • Experience working with an FPLC also a strong plus
  • Understanding of basic molecular biology, biochemistry, and genetics
  • Excellent analytical, communication, problem solving, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member while engaged in collaborative studies
  • Able to learn complex tasks with instruction, and to use experience to perform a variety of new techniques
  • Actively seeks opportunities to increase skills and expertise


Physical Requirements

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet). Work may involve possible exposure to malodorous vapors, low dose radiation, contamination by toxic chemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances.
