Seafood directly supplies 20% of animal protein to 3.3 billion people and indirectly employs 200 million people worldwide. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted food systems around the globe, including those in the seafood sector, affecting the lives and livelihoods of hundreds of millions of people. In the United States, many seafood harvesters pivoted to and expanded local and regional distribution efforts in order to cope with the crisis, diversify their operations, and build resilience in the face of future disruptions. Aligning with strategic local, regional, and national priorities, the Stoll Lab at UMaine is leading an effort to build a national consortium of fishing communities, researchers, and technical assistance that will collaborate to strengthen local and regional seafood systems in support of healthy fisheries and the communities that depend on them. This work will: (1) catalyze transdisciplinary research related to small-scale fisheries and local and regional seafood systems; (2) create dynamic training opportunities for a diverse cohort of graduate and undergraduate students; (3) facilitate network building and collaboration across consortium members; and (4) provide training, technical assistance, and resources to strengthen seafood operations engaged in local and regional seafood systems, with a focus on operations based in or serving rural, low income, and/or low food access areas. A postdoctoral research fellow will be hired to support this initiative.  Funding is specifically requested to hire someone with expertise in storytelling and communications. The postdoc will support the project team in writing, producing, and distributing communications materials including press releases, social media posts, graphics, podcasting, video, and/or other media products to enhance awareness and media coverage of the activities associated with the project. The postdoc is also expected to engage in independent and/or collaborative research related to the intersectionality of local and regional seafood systems and issues of access, equity, and justice. Initial appointment for one year, with renewal contingent upon funding and performance, up to a maximum duration of five years. Typical hiring salary for this position is $58,000.
