Responsibilities*

To perform a variety of routine or specialized tests and procedures in a clinical genetic molecular laboratory that are used by physicians to diagnosis and treat patients.

  • Prepare samples and perform complex molecular testing for the MMGL Molecular Genetics Laboratory: Nucleic Acid isolation and quantification, gel electrophoresis, PCR, qPCR, MLPA, xTAG Technology, fragment analysis, Sanger Sequencing, Next Generation Sequencing, and chromosomal microarrays for use in the diagnosis of genetic disease
  • Analyze genetic data and enter patient test results into the Laboratory Information System for laboratory director review and medical director sign out
  • Follow CLIA/CAP and other regulatory requirements
  • Write clinical Standard Operating Procedures
  • Perform routine laboratory equipment maintenance
  • Advanced trouble shooting of assay and equipment problems
  • Perform inventory and order lab reagents, commodities, and equipment
  • Prepare reagents and properly dispose of waste
  • Assist in developing and validating new clinical assays or software parameters for analyzing genetic data
  • Serve as a resource person to medical technologists as well as other healthcare professionals
  • Assist with quality projects and other data collection projects on a routine basis
  • Assist Senior technologist in direct observation competency evaluations

Participate in the training of laboratory personnel, Pediatric Genetic and Pathology Residents, and Clinical Molecular Genetic Trainees 

Required Qualifications*

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences, Genetics, Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or Biological Science
  • Certified by recognized accrediting agencies (ASCP or equivalent)
  • Minimum of 2 year of relevant experience in a clinical genetic molecular laboratory
  • Must have demonstrated ability to perform the duties of an MT at a high level of expertise, and the ability to perform the assigned work without sacrificing on patient care
  • Technical experience with molecular techniques: PCR, MLPA, fragment analysis, qPCR, Sanger sequencing, Next Generation sequencing, or chromosomal microarrays
  • Experience with genetics software: Mutation Surveyor, Sequencher, NxClinical, or NGS pipelines (commercial or in-house developed)
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of our team
  • Excellent attendance, ability to prioritize appropriately, and exercise good judgment
  • Competent computer skills: Microsoft Word, Excel and willingness to learn specialized software packages

Desired Qualifications*

  • Advanced genetic software analysis skills
  • Master's degree in Genetics, Medical Technology, or Clinical Laboratory Science
  • Familiarity with Epic, SCC Soft, and MediaLab
  • Familiarity with University administration, policies and procedures
  • Evidence of qualifications is demonstrated through performance evaluations, reference checks and/or personal interview

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
