The Coordinator of Advisor Training and Professional Development in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) Newnan Academic Advising Center is responsible for onboarding and training new advisors and assisting in providing professional development opportunities for all advisors in Student Academic Affairs (SAA). The Newnan Advising Center is situated in the LSA Student Academic Affairs (SAA) unit and plays a critical role in the undergraduate educational mission of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) at the University of Michigan. As the largest college on the Ann Arbor campus, LSA serves over 17,000 undergraduate students in over 100 degree programs. This position is primarily on-campus with allowances for hybrid work (i.e. three days in office, 2 days remote during academic year) and reports to the Associate Director of Advisor Development in the LSA Newnan Academic Advising Center.
LSA Student Academic Affairs (SAA) engages students, fosters their success, and upholds academic standards in support of the liberal arts and the University of Michigan community. As a community of over sixty full-time higher education professionals, and in collaboration with key partners across the college and beyond, SAA aspires to be a valued resource and leader in support of the academic and personal experience of undergraduate students at the university. Overall, SAA is responsible for helping LSA undergraduates achieve the expectations and rewards of the liberal arts and science education afforded by the college. To accomplish this responsibility, LSA SAA is organized into the following areas: Office of the Assistant Dean, Newnan LSA Academic Advising Center, Academic Opportunities & Support, and Academic Policy & Technology.
The Coordinator of Advisor Training and Professional Development in the Newnan LSA Academic Advising Center is responsible for leading the development and offering of an array of innovative and diverse advisor training and development programs that position both new and experienced advisors to understand and foster student development and success in support of the liberal arts. While organizing a variety of programs that assist advisors in supporting the academic and personal experiences of undergraduate students in collaboration with the Associate Director for Advisor Development, the coordinator will also have responsibility for the ongoing assessment of programmatic efforts.
The successful candidate will play a key role in enhancing the knowledge, skills, and abilities of professional advisors and staff that is rooted in advising best practice standards and competencies. They will be expected to build relationships with advisors and administrative staff within the center, as well as across the college and university, in order to support learning and development within the profession. They will also be expected to cultivate and contribute to a culture that is welcoming, supportive, and responsive to the diverse identities of our students and staff.
In addition to coordinating training and professional development for advisors, the coordinator is expected to maintain an assigned caseload of students. They will collaborate with a team of academic advisors within Newnan to provide support for students in the college and across the university, including the development and implementation of advising information, workshops, and initiatives.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY (KARs) - Detailed Characteristic Duties
Coordination of Advisor Training and Professional Development (50%)
- Coordinate onboarding process and deliver training for new advisors
- In collaboration with the Associate Director for Advisor Development, deliver training and professional development opportunities for departmental advisors (e.g. new departmental advisor training)
- Collaborate with LSA advising units (Honors, Residential College, Comprehensive Studies) to provide cross-functional training
- Partner with subject matter experts to develop and maintain training instructional materials
- Manage the new advisor training Canvas course
- Assist in the development, promotion, and management of ongoing training and professional development
- opportunities for advisors and staff
- Assist in the ongoing assessment of training/professional development efforts
General Advising (30%)
- Conduct general liberal arts advising for a cohort of LSA students
- Maintain contact through email with advisees, including responding to progress reports, outreach to students in academic difficulty, and alerting students to options and new opportunities consistent with their growth and development
- Maintain timely and accurate records of interactions with students, referrals, exceptions to standard procedures, and decisions affecting degree progress
- Review, troubleshoot, and resolve student concerns - advising, degree exceptions, graduation requirements
- Communicate with faculty and other administrators as needed
Newnan/SAA Administrative Responsibilities (20%)
- Serve as a liaison to two or more UM academic departments, and one or more schools, colleges or administrative units
- Lead the design and/or delivery of workshops, group advising, educational programs, etc.
- Represent Newnan and/or the college at recruitment and retention activities and events
- Serve on committees, task forces, and working groups as time and interests allow
- Exercise initiative in the ongoing efforts of the organization to improve the quality of service
- Master's degree in a liberal arts field, higher education, or area of study affording understanding of the undergraduate student experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- At least three years academic advising experience in a college or university setting
- Experience with training and development
- Track record of successful development and implementation of innovative programs, including their evaluation and assessment
- Evidence of national or regional involvement in the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA), or a similar organization or effort related to higher education advising
- Strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, including experience working with students and staff from diverse backgrounds and identities
- Proven ability to successfully work in a collaborative team environment
- Outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to establish positive and respectful working relationships with students, staff, and faculty
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Ability to maintain the integrity of confidential materials and student information
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to take initiative
- Familiarity with learning management systems (Canvas, Blackboard)
