Job Description

Overview

The Physical and Computational Sciences Directorate (PCSD) researchers lead major R&D efforts in experimental and theoretical interfacial chemistry, chemical analysis, high energy physics, interfacial catalysis, multifunctional materials, and integrated high-performance and data-intensive computing.

PCSD is PNNL’s primary steward for research supported by the Department of Energy’s Offices of Basic Energy Sciences, Advanced Scientific Computing Research, and Nuclear Physics, all within the Department of Energy's Office of Science.

Additionally, Directorate staff perform research and development for private industry and other government agencies, such as the Department of Defense and NASA. The Directorate's researchers are members of interdisciplinary teams tackling challenges of national importance that cut across all missions of the Department of Energy.

Responsibilities

The High-Performance Comptuing (HPC) Group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking post-doctoral candidates to contribute to and drive research in memory profiling and analysis tools, large-scale distributed scientific workflows, and the utilization of cloud computing resources in scientific computing contexts. With future scientific computing workloads increasingly integrating simulation of physical systems with data-driven approaches, the scientific computing ecosystem is diversifying in terms of computation patterns, systems, and platforms. In order to drive future scientific discovery, comptutational scientists must grapple with increasingly complex software mapped to heterogeneous and often distributed computing platforms. Fundamental research is required to gain better insight into how computing platforms are utilized by these new workloads, and to drive future system and software design.

The ideal candidate will lead research in the following topic areas:

Memory-centric measurement, analysis, and modeling to understand and improve application data access patterns, re-locate or re-compose tasks or data to improve locality, and inform hardware-software codesign for novel memory systems
Data-centric performance analysis, modeling and optimization for understanding data flow between storage, network, and memory
Characterizing, modeling, and accelerating the performance of current and emerging workloads in scientific modeling and data analytics
Cloud-based performance analysis and workload characterization for data intensive and HPC applications

Successful candidates will be involved in projects focusing on the development of tools and techniques to enable modeling and understand of data access and data movement within scientific workflows. Candidates will work with multi-disciplinary teams impacting computational science across the laboratory and larger scientific computing community. He/She will be working on cutting-edge HPC technologies and help shaping future scientific computing ecosystems, potentially contributing back to the open-source community in the form of software tools.
