CEO Position Description and Qualifications

About OADN

Established in 1984, the Organization for Associate Degree Nursing (OADN) is the national advocate for the over 1,100 Associate Degree Nursing programs across the country. OADN works to advance excellence in nursing education and the essential community college pathways into registered nursing careers. OADN ensures that the Associate Degree in Nursing remains a pathway for a diverse spectrum of students, enriching the profession, and meeting the health care needs of patients, families, and communities. OADN is led by a Board of Directors who oversee association governance and set the organization’s strategic plan. OADN’s CEO and staff manage the organization’s day-to-day operations and implementation of the Board’s strategic plan. The Board manages the creation of specialized committees to research and report back on issues important to membership including leadership and curriculum development, among others. OADN continues to disseminate information and provide an arena for collegial networking to those who are passionate about nursing education.

Mission: OADN is the national voice and a pivotal resource for community college nursing education and the associate degree pathway.

Vision: To expand networks that promote leadership, collaboration, and advocacy to further enrich nursing education and the communities we serve.

CEO Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Chief Executive Officer functions on behalf of the OADN Board of Directors to fulfill the mission and the strategic plan of the association. The CEO also serves as the Ex-Officio Director of the OADN Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that promotes the mission and vision of OADN, through the development of resources, the recognition of scholarship and excellence in associate degree nursing education, and the support of advocacy for associate degree nursing.

These activities constitute organizational management and leadership functions consistent with the CEO role:

Board Relationships

In collaboration with the OADN Executive Committee and the Board of Directors:

  • Reports on issues and trends in nursing and related associations, securing board input on matters of significance.
  • Report high-level activities that reflect on operations and matters which require board input/approval/awareness:
  • Operations impact
  • Membership status
  • Policy and Procedure development
  • Position paper development
  • Strategic/program accomplishments
  • Prepares an annual report to the board and membership of association status.
  • Prepares a self-assessment to be used in his/her performance evaluation.

Strategic Planning

  • Establishes the mechanism for the board to develop a strategic plan with goals and action plans.
  • Works with staff to the Board in implementing the strategic plan.

Fundraising

  • Secures funding through grants, philanthropic gifts, sponsorships, and other mechanisms that align with the OADN’s mission and strategic and operational priorities.
  • Develops partnerships to assist in the long-term sustainability of OADN.

Administration, Operations and Human Resources

  • Develops programs, policies and procedures that reflect OADN’s mission and strategic and operational priorities.
  • Develops and oversees business practices that are efficient, effective, legal, and in keeping with accounting practices, non-profit incorporation policies, and federal and state regulatory requirements.
  • Directs and evaluates other professionals who provide expertise to OADN.
  • Leads staff effectively and creates a work environment that promotes excellence.

Communications and Public Relations

  • Interacts with the media and other parties to impart OADN’s position, purpose, and priorities:
  • Media events
  • Contributes to Teaching and Learning in Nursing
  • Contributes to OADN newsletter and distributes CEO communications
  • Prepares/oversees news releases for dissemination in various modalities
  • Serves as OADN spokesperson for media, along with the President and for specific

meetings and events.

  • Maintains regular communication with the Teaching and Learning in Nursing editor

and attends Editorial Board meetings.

Financial Management

  • Develops and secures approval for an annual budget that reflects OADN’s strategic and operational priorities, conferring with the Executive Committee and CPA firm before presentations to the board.
  • With the OADN treasurer and COO, provides an accurate and timely update on revenues and expenses, cash-on-hand, investments and the overall financial capacity of the association, and unanticipated variances from budget.
  • Oversees the audit process ensuring accountability.

Strategic Relationships

  • Represents OADN to various stakeholder groups, advancing the value contributions of associate degree nursing education.
  • Strengthens the network of collaborators aligned with OADN.

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in healthcare, business, education, public health, nursing, public policy, social service administration or similar field; doctoral degree preferred.
  • Current license as Registered Nurse preferred.
  • Background in executive nursing, health care administration and/or business operations management with a minimum of 3 years’ experience in senior-level management or executive-level roles preferred.
  • Nursing association management experience strongly preferred, either as an association executive leader or as a volunteer association leader/community Board member.
  • Proven ability to lead, motivate, grow, and diversify volunteer leadership and build member engagement.
  • Demonstrated experience in leadership and managment role(s) within a nonprofit association or similar organization with proven fiscal, programmatic, and operational management experience.
  • Understanding of legal and financial operations with diversified revenue streams.
  • Ability to develop and implement a strategic plan.
  • Commitment to represent OADN at various national meetings and events of significance with professional integrity and executive presence. Ability to travel locally, regionally, and nationally as needed.

Skills and Attributes:

Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills. Composed and confident public speaker is required, to effectively advocate on behalf of OADN to our members, community, media, partners and legislative or regulatory stakeholders as needed.

Ability to effectively articulate OADN's positions to a wide, varied audience to advance all strategic priorites and issues impacting our members, partners, and profession.

  • Demonstated abilty to maintain and support a high quality operations team to support individual staff development, innovation and career advancement. Strong work ethic, accountability, positive attitude, teambuilder with thoughtful approach to association management and staff development.

Candidate must possess high level of integrity, authenticity and honesty with drive to serve the organization, embody its values and create an environment that fosters collaboration, innovation, accountabilty and transparency.

  • Relationship builder with internal and external stakeholders. Ability to network, negotiate, motivate and influence diverse group of individuals and stakeholders.
  • Problem solver, strategic thinker, reliable, innovative, visionary and flexible leader. Candidate must posess high level of emotional intelligence and strong interpersonal skills to build and support relationships among Board, volunteers, members, staff, partners, stakeholders.

Candidate must possess proficiency with networking at a national level among various organizations and industry leaders. Ability to effectively collaborate, negotiate, motivate and influence diverse group of individuals and stakeholders at the national level.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills with ability to pivot quickly to shifting needs and demands.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $160,000.00 - $175,000.00 per year
