Post-Doctoral Fellow in Genomics -Agriculture & Forestry

University of Memphis

Job Description

The McKenna Lab (http://www.duanemckenna.com) is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to work within an interdisciplinary team to design and implement comparative analyses of genomic data from beetles and other plant-feeding insects with a particular focus on economically-important invasive crop and forestry pest species. Specific areas of study will include the ecology, evolution, and genomic basis of insect-plant interactions, the population genomics of invasiveness, and the roles of microbes in the evolution of specialized plant-feeding habits. Grant-writing with other lab members is an important part of this position. The incumbent is expected to have strong writing and analytical skills. This is a 12-month appointment with the potential of extension contingent upon continued funding and satisfactory performance. Screening of applications begins June 30, 2022, but the position is open until filled.
The position offers a competitive salary plus benefits. Applications must be submitted online at https://workforum.memphis.edu/ and include a cover letter, CV, two representative publications (ideally, showcasing your writing or analytical skills), and contact information (not letters) for at least three professional references. Note that the McKenna Lab is hiring several different postdocs in the general topic area of genomics and insect-plant interactions. Be sure that you are applying for the intended position.

The McKenna Lab: We study insect systematics, genomics, evolution and diversity. Focal areas of study include the phylogeny and evolution of beetles and other insects, the evolution and genomic basis of plant-feeding and chemosensation in insects, and interactions between insects and plants on ecological and evolutionary timescales. We are part of a large community of biodiversity scientists associated with the Center for Biodiversity Research (www.umbiodiversity.org) in the Department of Biological Sciences (https://www.memphis.edu/biology/) at the University of Memphis—a leading metropolitan research and teaching institution in Memphis, TN, U.S.A.

  • Ph.D. in bioinformatics, computational biology, ecology, evolution, genetics, genomics, systematic biology, or similar.
  • A record of scientific publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience analyzing genomic/molecular data, including experience with Linux/Unix and data analysis via HPC.
  • Strong writing, communication and interpersonal skills, including a proven ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
