Position description
The Department of Plant and Microbial Biology at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Melis Lab, in the areas of Microbial Metabolic Engineering and Synthetic Biology.

The Postdoctoral Scholar position encompasses project design, development and management, implementation, and reporting of the results by presentations or manuscript drafting and submission for publication.

The candidate will work to conduct metabolic engineering and synthetic biology research for the generation of specialty and commodity products, which will include: (i) Design and development of DNA constructs for high level expression of heterologous genes and biosynthetic pathways in photosynthetic systems. (ii) Critical analysis of the results to inform the optimization required to improve the function of native and heterologous biosynthetic pathways for product generation. The work involves the transformation of photosynthetic (cyanobacteria) and non-photosynthetic microorganisms with heterologous gene constructs designed to cause overexpression of the corresponding proteins, followed by the genetic, molecular, biochemical and physiological analysis of the transformants, and drafting of reports, including power point presentations and manuscripts.
Qualifications Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
PhD (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a PhD (or equivalent international degree) program.
Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
PhD (or equivalent international degree) required by the appointment start date.
The candidate should have no more than four years of post-degree research experience by start date.
Preferred qualifications

Demonstrated experience in the field of bacterial / cyanobacterial transformations, molecular biology, physiology, biochemistry.

Demonstrated culture work for cell growth, subcellular product generation, isolation and quantification through biochemical analysis.
