Job Description

PhD Research Fellow in Materials Physics, Unravelling Emergent Quantum Phenomena Using Atom Probe

About the position

A 4-years PhD research fellow position in advanced atomic-scale characterization of functional materials is available. The PhD candidate will be part of our team at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at NTNU, strengthening our activities in the field of atom probe tomography (APT) and closely work together with NanoLab.

For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

APT is an imaging technique that facilitates atom mapping in 3D with unique chemical sensitivity down to tens of parts per million. Building up on our recent breakthrough regarding the APT characterization of functional oxides (arxiv.org/abs/2111.00317), we will leverage this outstanding possibility to explore otherwise inaccessible dopant-driven physical effects in selected model systems, adding a completely new dimension to the atomic-scale investigation of emergent quantum phenomena. The PhD candidate will learn how to prepare high-quality samples by FIB-SEM nano-structuring, conduct 3D tomography measurements and correlated microscopy experiments (e.g., transmission electron and scanning probe microscopy), and gain profound experience about the physics of functional oxides and their applications.

Further details about our research in the wider field can be found in our recent publication; see, e.g., Nature Rev. Mater. 7, 157 (2022), Nature Mater. 19, 1195 (2020), and Nature Nanotech.13, 1028 (2018). Additional information about scientific activities and the research team can be found here: https://www.ntnu.edu/web/ima/research/facet/topological

Duties of the position

The PhD student will perform original research, working closely together the PhD students and postdocs in our group. The PhD student will plan and conduct experiments according to the project objectives with support from the PIs (Prof. Dennis Meier & Prof. Julia Glaum) and the team. The experimental work includes advanced microscopy studies with a focus in atom probe tomography, as well as nanostructuring using FIB (focus ion beam). In addition to the experiments, the PhD student will present the work at international conferences and in written form in scientific articles.

One year of the 4-years contract will be dedicated to “duty work” in NanoLab, which includes, e.g., the training of other students and maintenance of infrastructure.

Required selection criteria

  • You must have a professionally relevant background in physics, materials science, nano-science/technology, chemistry, or equivalent
  • Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree programme, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level
  • You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
  • You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty's doctoral program
  • applicants must be able to communicate fluently in English

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant

Preferred selection criteria

A strong background and hands-on experience in FIB nanostructuring, atom probe tomography, transmission electron microscopy, or scanning probe microscopy is desired. In addition, the ideal candidate has a strong background in materials science / physics and a good understanding of complex oxides.

Personal characteristics

We search for a person that is creative, innovative and can work independently. The person we are searching for has excellent communication skills, is fluent in spoken and written English, and enjoys experimental work and collaborating with other PhD candidates, postdocs, and international researchers.

We offer

Salary and conditions

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 491 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 4 years.

Starting date: 01.11.2022.

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in Materials Science and Engineering within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.
