The Making Hope Happen Foundation (MHHF) leverages the power of hope to deliver asset-based programming focused on uplifting youth in communities within the San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD). The communities we serve are rich with diverse cultures stemming from a majority BIPOC population, while at the same time facing the challenges of historic disinvestment and high levels of poverty. MHHF works alongside the SBCUSD and in partnership with many other organizations to:

  • provide early childhood development training and engagement programs for parents,
  • support innovative K12 education programs,
  • provide mentor-supported scholarships to help local high school graduates succeed in post-secondary education, and
  • serve as the backbone organization providing glue for Uplift San Bernardino, a collective impact initiative supporting the City of San Bernardino.

The Executive Director will lead MHHF to the next level of its organizational development. MHHF started as the Community and School Alliance in 1986 and was reinvented in 2015 to more strategically and broadly support solutions that will impact the communities in which students served by SBCUSD live. MHHF mission is to engage people, build partnerships, provide leadership, and deliver resources where they are needed to achieve a thriving and innovative community in which every student is a lifelong learner and can be successful in meeting their hopes and aspirations.

Working with a volunteer Board of Directors, the Executive Director will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for the Making Hope Happen Foundation staff, programs, expansion, and execution of its mission. The Executive Director’s responsibilities will include:

Leadership & Management:

  • Lead and develop a high-performing senior leadership team and play an active role in attracting, retaining, and developing a best-in-class board and staff.
  • Provide guidance and support for various program directors to ensure successful oversight and outcomes in accordance with the goals of the organization.
  • Create, nurture and expand opportunities for collaboration between the MHHF and San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD).
  • Develop and manage MHHF's budget and work with the Board to ensure that it is a financially viable, sustainable organization with the resources to meet current and projected program growth.
  • Prioritize professional development for staff and volunteers in keeping with the MHHF commitment to provide opportunities for local residents.
  • Maintain political awareness and navigate politically sensitive situations to protect and advance the MHHF.
  • Ensure compliance with laws, regulations, and organizational policies.

Communication & Fundraising:

  • Strengthen the credibility of the MHHF with donors, partners and within the communities, we serve through effective communication strategies.
  • Communicate and promote the benefits of MHHF programs by reaching out to the community to present its vision and services through public presentations and by attending relevant business events, conferences, and gatherings.
  • Develop and successfully implement a fundraising plan for the organization with both short and long-term goals designed to meet the MHHF resource needs.
  • Identify and cultivate corporate, individual, and foundation donors, partners, and sponsors.
  • Understand which grant opportunities fit the strategic goals of the organization and prepare it to be successful in the submission and implementation of the grants.

Planning & Implementation:

  • Share and execute a vision for the Foundation’s growth
  • Establish implementation plans in order to meet organizational goals and organize work to meet benchmarks and timelines.
  • Develop and monitor annual budget allocating resources to effectively implement plans.

Program Development & Operations:

  • Develop and maintain effective processes and procedures that yield growth and the creation of programs.
  • Ensure effective fiscal practices are implemented to assure successful audits
  • Hire, supervise and evaluate direct reports and ensure all personnel is effectively managed.
  • Ensure technology solutions are effectively meeting operational needs and organizational goals.

Board Development & Governance:

  • Develop, evaluate and recommend policies to promote effective and efficient operations and maintain compliance with all laws and regulations.
  • Develop and work with the Board, ensuring that Board committees and efforts are well-organized and funded.
  • Inform the Board regularly of internal organization matters, including relevant staffing, funding, and program status.
  • Convene an annual board retreat to develop goals and objectives for the upcoming year
  • Develop agendas and prepare items for discussion at board meetings. Staff the board as appropriate.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The candidate appointed to this position will:

  • Demonstrate a commitment to the mission of the Making Hope Happen Foundation.
  • Have a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field or a comparable combination of education and experience.
  • Show a track record of success in leadership of a nonprofit organization in a similar stage of development.
  • Be able to pass a comprehensive background check.
  • Be proficient with technology commonly used in modern remote offices and fundraising organizations.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to, understanding of, and respect for the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, religious, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of all.
  • Be able to communicate effectively in English, and
  • Possess a valid California Driver’s License, insurance, and reliable transportation.

Additionally, MHHF desires the successful candidate to be:

  • Able to demonstrate at least five years of experience with a track record of success in the leadership of a nonprofit organization.
  • A Certified Fundraising Executive, CFRE
  • Able to communicate in both English and Spanish.
  • A resident of the City of San Bernardino or graduate of the SBCUSD.

SALARY: $115,000, commensurate with experience.

REMOTE WORK: MHHF is currently a fully remote team with all employees working from homes based in the local community. The Executive Director will work remotely but must be available daily for in-person meetings, events, and activities in the San Bernardino area. Work hours will vary depending upon organizational needs.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $115,000.00 per year
