Position Overview

In the wake of the Generation Equality journey and with the Agenda 2030 deadline on the horizon, the UN Foundation Girls and Women team seeks a dynamic and thoughtful Senior Director to lead, deepen and expand the team’s role as an agent for connected and strengthened ecosystems that are aligned and equipped to champion gender equality and realize meaningful progress.

The Senior Director will work with the Vice President for Girls and Women’s Strategy. The Senior Director will manage a geographically dispersed, cross-cultural team including the following positions: Director, UN Engagement; Director, Private Sector Engagement; Manager, Program Planning and M&E; and Senior Communications Officer.

This position is based in Washington D.C. (Hybrid Schedule)

Essential Functions

  • Lead and oversee all Girls and Women workstreams, including team core functions and operations, including UN and private sector engagement, monitoring and evaluation, grantmaking, and strategic communications
  • Serve as deputy to the Vice President of Girls and Women’s Strategy, including triage, prioritization, and delegation across the team as needed.
  • Support the Vice President for Girls and Women’s Strategy on strategic planning, and resource mobilization including identification and cultivation of potential funding prospects
  • Develop and oversee the implementation of high-level strategic approaches and priorities for UN Foundation’s Girls and Women’s portfolio, with particular attention to engaging feminist movements and networks and regional perspectives across core functions
  • Own and manage high-level external relationships with key partners, including at the UN, with civil society, within the private sector, and with funders
  • Drive the design and growth of an expanded Girls and Women team, including team structures and processes
  • Drive the overall policy and advocacy agenda and stakeholder engagement strategy for the Girls and Women portfolio
  • Act as a thought leader and external representative on gender equality and girls’ and women’s rights for the UN Foundation
  • Lead on managing internal collaborations and relationships across gender equality-related initiatives at the UN Foundation
  • Lead the WithHer Fund partnership with the Spotlight Initiative

Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated commitment to intersectional feminist values and principles
  • Minimum 15+ years of experience working in the gender equality, women’s rights, and/or girls’ rights ecosystem, or international development
  • Bachelor’s degree required in relevant field
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to provide strategic and innovative thought leadership, and high-level direction
  • Strong technical expertise and knowledge concerning a range of gender equality issue areas within international development at global and regional levels
  • Deep and sustained working relationships and collaborations with a wide range of gender equality stakeholders, including the UN, civil society, youth leaders, philanthropies, and the private sector
  • Proven track record of resource mobilization and ability to steward major grant proposals and grant execution, including monitoring and evaluation
  • Extensive experience with UN advocacy, policy advocacy on gender equality, and partnerships at global and regional levels
  • Knowledge of and engagement within recent multilateral processes on gender equality, including Generation Equality and the Commission on the Status of Women
  • Experience with program design and management, institution-strengthening, and capacity-building
  • Experience designing, managing, and growing high-performance team structures and processes
  • Ability to efficiently and inclusively manage, support, and grow a remote and diverse team
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle stress
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally
