Under the direction of the college president, the Vice President for Student Services (VPSS)

serves as the Chief Student Affairs Officer (CSAO), is a member of the President’s Executive Cabinet, and maintains regular communication between the president, cabinet, and the departments relating to student services. The VPSS is responsible for providing campus-wide leadership, supervision, guidance, and direction for student services, including enrollment management, recruitment, retention, student success, the Testing and Learning Center, counseling, career coaching, tutoring, financial aid, Student Center, student activities, student organizations, NJCAA athletics, college transition and transfer, Title IX compliance, student conduct, grant programs, and staff within the division.

The Vice President for Student Services will supervise the Dean of Enrollment Management, the Dean of Student Success, the Dean of Student Support Services, the Athletic Director, and others who provide related services to students in the areas of counseling, academic advising, retention, recruitment, admissions, registrar services, tutoring, testing, financial aid, as well as support staff in the divisions.

The Vice President for Student Services has responsibility for the following:

  1. Providing leadership to ensure that the division designs, develops, evaluates, and delivers a comprehensive array of programs and services which fulfill the institutional mission in the areas of enrollment, student success, and student support
  2. Providing leadership to develop fully each student’s human potential, while striving to create a community of learners who value diversity, knowledge, and integrity
  3. Providing leadership for establishing multi-year tactical and annual operational goals designed to implement the strategic goals of the College, President, and the Board of Trustees
  4. Recommending organizational structures, personnel, and resources to ensure a student-centered, learner-centered environment at all levels
  5. Providing oversight for all campus-based student development programs, including counseling, advising, tutoring, student advocacy, student activities, student organizations, and other programs and services
  6. Collaborating with campus leaders on fostering and promoting new opportunities for educational partnerships with high schools and public and private sector entities
  7. Providing leadership for handling campus emergencies, Title IX training and reporting, resolving student issues and complaints in a timely manner, and communicating and interpreting College policies and procedures
  8. Providing leadership for planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating college programs and services to support student success and college-wide student outcomes
  9. Developing and overseeing department budgets, schedules, and facilities utilization, and coordinating programs and services with other campus personnel
  10. Serving as a liaison between the campus and local communities in matters relating to student services and fostering partnerships within local communities, where appropriate
  11. Leading staff in planning and assessment measures to assure student success and achievement of college-wide outcomes and strategic goals and initiatives
  12. Encouraging the professional development process for division staff
  13. Assisting in the preparation of the annual budget
  14. Assisting in the planning of new facilities and equipment
  15. Assisting in the preparation of the college catalog
  16. Assisting in the formulation of college procedures
  17. Approving travel and purchase requisitions for division personnel
  18. Preparing federal, state, and other reports as required or assigned by the college president
  19. Coordinating the writing of proposals for external funding for special programs
  20. Providing leadership on the process for academic advising
  21. Providing leadership for developing or revising college policies, procedures, and operational activities related to enrollment management and student success
  22. Providing leadership on initiatives designed to enhance students’ job readiness and employer relationships
  23. Representing the college at meetings and conferences as required or requested
  24. Serving as a team member for the college during the selection process of employees within the division
  25. Providing leadership and guidance for shared governance committees and councils
  26. Recommending initiatives and providing oversight of college efforts designed to strengthen the college’s relationships with community-based or state organizations and other external entities
  27. Providing leadership to ensure quality outcomes in all aspects of the college’s extended campus programs
  28. Performing other duties as assigned by the college president.

The Vice President for Student Services should possess the following knowledge, skills, and characteristics:

  1. Knowledge of college, state, and federal policies and procedures affecting assigned work
  2. Knowledge of curriculum and program development
  3. Knowledge of management practices and principles
  4. Knowledge of instructional programming
  5. Knowledge of enrollment management
  6. Knowledge of student development programs and services, financial aid, and federal compliance
  7. Knowledge of strategic planning, assessment, and use of appropriate measures for improvement
  8. Knowledge of budget preparation, monitoring, and administration
  9. Knowledge of supervisory principles, practices, and techniques
  10. Knowledge of technological applications in areas of supervision
  11. Skill in solving difficult problems
  12. Skill in the initiative and follow-through
  13. Skill in analyzing data and making appropriate recommendations
  14. Skill in developing and implementing policies and procedures
  15. Skill in acting as a community liaison and college representative
  16. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other division staff, faculty, students, and the public
  17. Skill in presenting ideas and concepts orally and in writing
  18. Skill in advocating for college programs and initiatives
  19. Ability to manage multiple projects and inspire others to achieve objectives
  20. Ability to work within an open and team environment using collaborative approaches
  21. Ability to lead and collaborate with faculty and staff effectively
  22. Ability to focus faculty and staff toward student learning
  23. Ability to motivate and inspire faculty and staff across campuses
  24. Ability to commit to establishing, maintaining, and assessing collaborative educational and service programs
  25. Ability to foster campus-wide partnerships to promote educational quality

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from a regionally accredited university required, Doctorate strongly preferred
  • Five years of administrative/supervisory experience
  • Five years of progressive experience in student services
  • Computer skills
  • Distinguished record of administration and community college student services experience
  • Competence in leadership, planning, assessment, and budgeting
  • A commitment to quality student-centered service and student success.
  • Work schedule requiring some evenings and weekends
