Position Summary

OpenStax (part of Rice University) is a non-profit textbook publisher, learning software producer, and platform for learning research. Our mission is to provide every student and instructor with free access to high-quality teaching and learning resources that help them succeed. We have created a library of more than 50 free and openly licensed college textbooks that have served millions of students across the globe, resulting in over one billion dollars in savings. We have created additional software and course materials to help college students read with more engagement and practice more effectively, incorporating our research team’s expertise in cognitive science and machine learning.

The Associate Director, Marketing Operations develops processes that optimize technology and enable effective marketing, manages the work of the Business Intelligence Team and 2-3 direct reports. In addition, this individual documents the roadmap and manages the technology-related execution of marketing and sales strategies and ensures highest quality data and analytics to inform decision making.

The ideal candidate loves collaborating with others, digging into marketing data, and creating well thought out, documented, and well organized project plans that they can carry to the finish line. They have specialized experience with martech stacks and enjoy the detail and process oriented work of optimizing this technology to meet marketing goals. While they are process oriented, the ideal candidate can be flexible and adjust quickly to changing goals. The ideal candidate is an experienced marketer who is motivated by OpenStax’s philanthropic mission.

You will join a team who is driving change at a pivotal phase of our evolution, as we deliver high quality educational content, ranging from textbooks to simulations and videos to exercises to full courses, and give educators and learners the support they need in core college disciplines.

Essential Functions

  • Develops and executes marketing strategies and marketing plans / programs to meet departmental and/or organizational objectives
  • Leads the execution of communication and brand strategy for multiple programs incorporating appropriate channel
  • Responsible for staff including the recruitment, management, development, and retention of staff
  • Sets budget, goals, and objectives in alignment with organizational goals
  • Manages vendor relationships
  • Oversees market research and analysis
  • Uses the results to inform decisions regarding strategic marketing direction, product segmentation and customer targeting
  • Assess market opportunities and track market trends. Implement marketing improvements based on findings
  • Performs all other duties as assigned

Additional Functions

  • Will supervise 2-3 full time direct reports and the work of the business intelligence team which manages the organization’s CRM system and technical platforms, along with contractors, vendors, and interns as needed.
  • Will manage marketing and promotional budgets.
  • Create and manage project plans with clearly defined deliverables and resources, coordinate work streams and dependencies, track and communicate progress toward goals, and identify barriers and ensure they are addressed.
  • Own the marketing operations roadmap, ensuring marketing technology is evaluated, selected, implemented and customized to meet the needs of the marketing and sales team.
  • Be proactive and review functionality, workflow, and all marketing automation to ensure everything is optimally performing.
  • Ensure highest quality Salesforce data, ensure compliance with government/international privacy and user data laws.
  • Ensure high data quality and help colleagues access that data to enable decision making.
  • Track and report on the entire marketing funnel including volume, velocity, conversion stage-to-stage, and average value measured by number of students served; make sure funnel measures can be analyzed by key dimensions such as institution type, location, and personas.
  • Audit use of marketing software tools with an eye towards continually improving how they are configured.
  • Exercise and promote a culture of excellent data stewardship.
  • Investigate data quality and continuously improve on data quality.
  • Oversee operational initiatives across the marketing and sales team and with other functions to drive performance improvements, continuously enhance the impact of marketing and help the company continue quickly increasing its impact.
  • Regularly inform stakeholders across marketing, sales, and finance of insights on marketing performance to ensure cross functional alignment on the best possible data-driven marketing strategy.
  • Collaborate across functions to structure problems, conduct analysis, and drive to solutions through a rigorous, data-driven process.
  • Work with teams to optimize technology and processes to enable effective marketing.
  • Design processes that are understood and followed in a way that minimizes inaccurate or incomplete data, ensure all processes are documented.
  • Create training documentation and conduct training sessions for the marketing and communications team and other stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
    • May substitute additional related experience, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis in lieu of the education requirement.
  • 8 years of experience in marketing, communications, sales, postsecondary education, or related professional fields
    • May substitute additional related education, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis in lieu of the experience requirement.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including presentation, teamwork, and influencing skills
  • Excellent organization and creativity skills
  • Excellent analytical problem solving skills, and the ability to think strategically and develop structure needed to ensure optimal use of business tools and assets
  • Excellent problem solving capability

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing teams, supervising direct reports, and/or contract staff.
  • Demonstrated management skill and ability to oversee a team and work in a group environment, including collaboration with Senior/Executive level leadership.
  • Experience collaborating with different roles within an ed tech organization, e.g. web developers, finance, executive leadership.
  • Ability to use Google Analytics to understand user behavior and trends
  • Knowledge of and ability to use Salesforce, Pardot, and web content management systems (e.g. Squarespace, WordPress)
  • Ability to collaborate with a team and develop creative solutions
  • Ability to understand market trends
  • Desire to learn new things and the ability to learn quickly with minimal guidance
