PT Instructor - Health Sciences (Nursing Science/Clinical Practice - Lecture)

Job Duties

Teach in an associate degree nursing program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) and approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN); teach nursing lecture, clinical, and skills laboratory in medical-surgical nursing incorporating the curriculum threads, such as geriatrics and critical thinking; in addition to teaching in a nursing specialty (obstetrics, pediatrics, or psychiatric nursing); function in a manner consistent with the department's standards, unifying curricular theme, approved course outlines, and plan of instruction; collaborate with colleagues to sustain a civil and supportive learning environment; demonstrate a level of engagement in nursing and nursing education that enables and motivates the integration of acquired knowledge and skills beyond the classroom; evaluate the effectiveness of  teaching/learning using evidence–based standards; incorporate innovative teaching strategies in planning, developing and teaching theory, clinical and laboratory experiences; participate in curriculum design, implementation, and evaluation including test construction and analysis; participate in developing policies and procedures; coordinate student learning experiences; contribute to systematic program evaluation reports and self-studies, participate in all ongoing departmental and select institutional activities; utilize mid and high fidelity simulators as a teaching methodology; incorporate on-line teaching methodologies; demonstrate commitment to excellence in nursing education by continual professional development and scholarly activities; adhere to BRN regulations and Health and Safety Requirements; maintain office hours; participate in staff development programs, and college, departmental, and faculty organization activities. Schedule may include day, evening, and weekend classes, and/or short-term classes (the nursing courses are short term classes).

Minimum Qualifications

Master's in nursing as required by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN)
OR
Bachelor's in nursing AND Master's in health education or health science OR the equivalent*
OR
the minimum qualifications as set by the Board of Registered Nursing, whichever is higher
OR
possession of an appropriate valid California Community College Credential authorizing service in the specified subject area(s).

Possession of a license to practice as a registered nurse in the state of California.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctorate in nursing is desirable
  • Completion of a course in teaching techniques/methods offered at an accredited institution (if masters not in nursing education)
  • Experience as a registered nurse within the last five years, with at least two years providing direct patient care in a medical-surgical setting
  • Full-time teaching experience in nursing education
  • Knowledge of the importance of providing a supportive learning environment
  • Knowledge of test construction and evaluation measures
  • Knowledge of curriculum development, contemporary nursing practice, and national health care standards
  • Evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the socio-economic, academic, cultural and ethnic diversity within the community college student population including students with learning disabilities as these factors relate to differences in learning styles.

Pay Philosophy
Starting salaries for PT Faculty are based on educational achievement.  Initial placement is within the starting salary range.  Further advancements are based on longevity and educational growth.
