The Department of Fisheries & Wildlife invites applications for 12-month, fixed-term, full-time (1.0 FTE) Instructor position to teach courses and provide advising to online graduate students.

The Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, an academic unit that reports to the College of Agricultural Sciences, is composed of approximately 300 staff – including academic faculty, research assistants, classified staff, graduate students, and temporary staff. We are a vibrant department that promotes a supportive “family” atmosphere for all students and employees.

The mission of the Department is to discover, integrate and disseminate knowledge about wildlife and fisheries resources, as well as ecosystems and human communities with which they interrelate. We accomplish that in a conservation framework through an interconnected program of
1) Undergraduate and graduate education
2) Scholarly research and
3) Extended education.
Our student population includes over 900 undergraduates (700 online), 100 MS/PhD students, 30 Professional Science Masters students, and 275 graduate certificate students.

Successful applicants will teach primarily online courses, covering regularly offered courses at both the graduate and undergraduate level, but can also include a range of other possible responsibilities as highlighted below. The department offers over 80 courses, most of which are available online and offered multiple times each year.

Position Duties

85% Instruction
Courses will focus on areas of fish biology, ecology, and management, aquatic biology, will include writing intensive courses, and others as assigned.

5% Curriculum Development
Review and update current course content and possibly develop new courses as needed.

5% Mentor and Advise Students
Provide feedback to students taking distance education courses on projects, course requirements, advise students in the graduate certificate program, mentor graduate students teaching online courses, and potentially serve on non-thesis graduate committees.

5% Service
Provide service to the department, college or University in consultation with supervisor.

Minimum/Required Qualifications

M.S. in fisheries and wildlife, biological, environmental science or related field.

Teaching experience at the college or university level in courses related to fisheries biology and aquatic sciences.

Commitment to promoting cultural diversity, inclusivity, and educational equity.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications

The ideal candidate has a combination of education and experience that provides them with an understanding of fisheries management, fisheries biology, and associated courses as an academic discipline and its application in a professional setting.

PhD. in the professional discipline used to meet the minimum requirements.

Evidence of formal training in teaching, especially online teaching.

Experience developing and teaching online courses.

Experience developing and teaching online courses related to the courses mentioned above.

Experience with using inclusive pedagogy to support learning for students with a variety of backgrounds and lived experiences.

Evidence of teaching excellence, e.g., evaluations by student, peer, or mentors, awards.

A record of promoting and enhancing diversity and inclusiveness.

Life experience, education, or training that broadens capacity to equalize student success or impact underserved audiences.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

Travel to fieldtrips may be required
