Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Director of Strategic Advancement Initiatives is responsible for steering the strategic direction of initiatives within University Relations (UR) at the direction of the Vice President for University Relations (VPUR), ensuring they align with the overarching mission and goals of the organization. This entails providing strategic leadership to drive annual division goals in collaboration with the division’s senior leadership, as well as facilitating division-wide projects and initiatives. This position will be crucial in developing divisional practices and procedures, fostering consistency, and transparency in the operation, optimizing UR’s impact and efficacy.

The Director is an important partner in the strategic management of the University Relations program. In addition to strategic planning, this position will oversee several areas of project management within advancement operations. Often acting as a liaison between the VPUR and the other members of UR’s senior leadership, this person will foster collaboration and alignment across various departments, maximizing the implementation and sustainability of fundraising and campaign projects.

The Director will work closely with the University of Maryland College Park Foundation’s Chief Financial Officer to align budgets and spending with departmental priorities.

This position will also supervise a Program Director of Development, providing critical project management support to the Development team leadership of UR.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree.

Experience:
  • 6 years of relevant experience.
  • Project management experience, working with cross-functional teams and departments, and with senior/principal team members.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically, analyst complex issues, and develop innovative solutions.
  • Strong skills in building and sustaining processes, procedures, and workflows.
  • Strong writing, editing, and research skills, as well as document and slide formatting/design.
  • Proven skills in managing a number of competing priorities and complex issues effectively
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Ability to think proactively and work independently.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate and achieve results.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and appropriately both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to use online databases and other resources to conduct research, including identification of best practice.

The salary range is $116,560 – $145,700.

This position allows for a combination of in-person and telework days as approved by the supervisor. Guidance regarding hybrid work is subject to change at any time to align with operational or business needs.
