Postdoctoral Fellow

UAB Heersink School of Medicine

Department of Medical Education

The Department of Medical Education at the Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine, University of Alabama at Birmingham is seeking highly motivated applicants with an interest in medical education for a full-time Postdoctoral position. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to train in a robust medical school setting to develop a dual skillset in medical education involving active learning strategies and medical education research. Upon completion of training, the candidate will be well-poised to pursue a career as a medical educator.

The successful candidate will participate in research projects exploring the outcomes of medical curricular change including: converting a didactic curriculum to an active learning curriculum and integrating clinical skills with basic sciences. A combination of quantitative and qualitative research methodology (mixed methods) will be utilized. Additionally, the candidate will participate in medical school teaching within their area of expertise (e.g., anatomy, physiology, microbiology, immunology, neuroscience, etc.) using active learning approaches including team-based learning (TBL), case-based learning, peer instruction, and medical simulation. The position is funded for two years, contingent upon successful progress during the first year.

Minimum requirements:

Ph.D. in a biomedical science field (e.g., immunology, neuroscience, cell biology, anatomy, pharmacology, etc.)

Strong interest in medical education

Ability to work independently and cooperatively as part of a team

Preferred qualifications:

Experience teaching in a graduate or health science course

Experience in education or social science research
