Mentor: Dr. Susan Campbell, Department of Cell, Developmental and Integrative Biology

The Campbell Lab in the Department of Cell, Developmental and Integrative Biology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Heersink School of Medicine, is seeking highly motivated applicants for a full-time, Postdoctoral position. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to join our ongoing projects and pursue new directions in the area of epilepsy and other seizure-associated neurological disorders in the context of the microbiome.

The successful candidate will participate in projects including: Deciphering the role of the gut microbiome in the treatment of epilepsy. Evaluating the effects of vaping nicotine and flavorings on seizure susceptibility and neuronal function (and in the context of sickle cell disease). Examining mechanisms of seizure development in pediatric glioma. The candidate will be required to independently conduct experiments and prepare data for publication, as well as assist laboratory team members. The candidate will have access to state-of-the-art lab equipment, and departmental/inter-departmental core facilities to ensure the success of our research. Candidates must be self-driven, well-organized, and have published first-author papers in internationally recognized journals. Candidate must be able to work independently as well as cooperatively with a team.

Minimum requirements:
Ph.D. in neuroscience or related field

Experience with mouse models of epilepsy, or related neurological disorders

The candidate should be comfortable working with BSL2+ biospecimens

Experience in small animal surgeries (EEG is preferred)

Preferred qualifications: Familiar with electrophysiology, EEG surgery and recordings, sterile microbiome techniques, ELISA and qRT-PCR. Bioinformatics knowledge is preferred but is not required.
