Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

This position serves as a Senior Health Physicist/Assistant Radiation Safety Officer within the University’s Radiation Safety Office and reports to the Manager, Radiation Safety/Radiation Safety Officer(RSO) within the Department of Environmental Safety, Sustainability and Risk (ESSR). The Senior Health Physicist/Assistant Radiation Safety Officer provides high level technical support for the overall safety program designed to ensure radiation exposures are maintained As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA). The Senior Health Physicist/Assistant Radiation Safety Officer takes a lead role in the development and implementation of radiation safety programs specific to the management of the research involving radiation and radioactive materials; this includes , but is not limited to the to University Training Reactor (MUTR) and Radiation Facility. The position supports the RSO and the campus’ Radiation Safety Committees in the development, implementation and maintenance of policies, plans, guidelines, training, and practices that support regulatory compliance within licensed operations at the University’s College Park campus and other areas under its control.

Responsibilities include conducting a wide -variety of radiological surveys and laboratory sample, analyses for identification and quantification of radioactive material; development of radiation safety programs and procedures; performance and documentation of hazard analysis for research protocols ; recommending control measures to ensure occupational and public exposures are maintained ALARA; maintaining radiological certifications; developing and providing training; reviewing proposed regulations and standards; implementing regulatory requirements; preparing reports and other technical documents ; responding to incidents; performing other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree.

Experience:
  • 7 years of practical experience in an operational health physics program.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge and practical experience in implementing radiation protections standards, calculating radiation related data including radiation exposures, effluent releases, shielding, assay quantification and others required by an operational health physics program.
  • Ability to identify and conduct appropriate radiation measurements.
  • Ability to determine the appropriate techniques for the, identification and implementation of exposure control methods, and the application of regulations in a research environment, including requirements at a research and training reactor.
  • Ability to effectively present information, ideas and radiation safety concepts to stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Literate in basic Microsoft Office software, possess excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, and have exceptional administrative and organizational abilities.
  • Ability to fulfill the requirements for the NRC Trustworthy & Reliable Increased Controls Orders.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Health Physics or close related scientific discipline.
  • Experience in supporting a health physics program for a research and training reactor.
  • Practical health physics experience within a university research environment.
  • Certification by the American Board of Health Physics.

Additional Certifications:

  • The candidate must successfully pass an NRC FBI criminal history review and background check as part of the University’s Trustworthy and Reliability program.

  • The candidate must successfully pass a post-offer, pre-employment physical as a requirement to wear a respirator and participate in incident response.

  • The candidate must have a valid driver’s license.

Physical Demands

  • The candidate must be capable of working in temperature extremes and environments that are uncomfortable and that present potential health risks if appropriate protections are not utilized.

  • The candidate must pass an annual physical examination to utilize protective equipment, including respiratory protection, be capable of lifting equipment and materials up to fifty (50) pounds.

  • The candidate will be required to occasionally work off-hours and be subject to on-call capacity to respond to and investigate incidents.
