CVM Teaching Animal UnitAbout the Department
The Teaching Animal Unit (TAU) is a dynamic teaching institution for veterinary students in all four years of the veterinary curriculum that includes experiences with swine, poultry, sheep, goats, horses and beef/dairy cattle. The purpose of the TAU is to provide realistic opportunities for veterinary students to learn the relationship between husbandry, production management, economics and the field of veterinary medicine. This live animal farming enterprise strives to function in a manner compatible with a financially viable agricultural enterprise by emphasizing current best management practices for an environmentally enriched, animal welfare friendly operation. This student exposure is accomplished annually by providing live animal educational training for seven senior 2-week clinical rotations, six 1-week selective courses and in excess of 150 teaching laboratories (currently comprising 100 students per class at 25 students per lab), and 4th year clinical rotations as needed.
Essential Job Duties
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Animal care
- Herd management
- Record keeping
- Animal welfare
- Pasture management
- Assist other technicians as needed, after cross-training, with poultry, swine, horses, dairy and beef cattle
- Supports the teaching program of the CVM by assisting professors in laboratories focusing on small ruminants
Other Responsibilities
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Experience/Education
Other Required Qualifications
- In-depth knowledge of Small Ruminant health and management
- Knowledge of same in other large and food animal species
- Ability to safely operate farm equipment – (tractors and manure spreader)
- Ability to lift 50-70 lbs, hay bales consecutively during hay season
- Ability to work in inclement weather and to physically work with and move large farm animals.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge and experience of small ruminant management
- Knowledge and experience of other large animal species
Required License or Certification
- Valid NC Drivers’ license.
Valid NC Driver's License required
