Job Summary

Constructs and dismantles scaffolding of multiple types. Installs and removes sky climbers, safety handrails, lifelines, and water evacuation equipment. Cleans tanks, operates waste water treatment facilities, operates pump trucks, and performs general shipyard cleanup. Inspects and sorts scaffolding materials. Operates high reaching equipment and saws. Installs fire equipment and loads out material in support of ship delivery. Assists other trades in sea trials and launchings. Moves furniture and other equipment as needed. Performs other related task as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position.

Qualification Standards

Scaffold building experience and a certificate in high reach equipment and sky climbers are required. Must have Scaffold Competent Personal Training. Must have the ability to read and write in English. Must have the ability to read a tape measure and operate power tools safely. Must have the ability to determine amount and type of materials needed for constructing scaffolds. Must have the ability to pass mechanical reasoning. Must be clean shaven for a respirator fit (modest moustache is fine). Must have the ability to work at heights above thirty feet, in confined spaces, and be able to work any shift. Must be able to understand written and verbal instructions, hear warning signals, and read and comprehend safety instructions, regulations, and warnings.

Essential Job Tasks

  1. Construct and dismantle scaffolds and other wooden structures, safety handrails, and other equipment.
  2. Clean tanks, operate Waste Water Treatment Facility, operate pump truck and perform general shipyard clean-up.
  3. Operate high reaching equipment, painting and chipping equipment, and tools such as saws, drills and chainsaws.
  4. Inspect and sort scaffolding materials.
  5. Assist trades in sea trials and launches.
  6. Install fire equipment and load out material in support of ship delivery.
  7. Occasionally move furniture and other equipment.
  8. Work with both the Paint and the Blast Department in performing cross trade responsibilities.
  9. Other tasks may be assigned relevant to the trade.

Materials, Tools Equipment, Work Aids

Metal, wood, scaffold sub-section, bolts, clips, hand tools, pneumatic tools, high reaching equipment, sky climbers, painting or chipping equipment, cable lines, rope lines and cleaning equipment. Office furniture, file cabinets, dollies and forklifts. Personal protective equipment required.

Physical/Mental Involvement

Works in all areas of the shipyard and on board ships requiring repetitive or prolonged standing, bending, walking, reaching, pushing/pulling, lifting/carrying, climbing, seeing, hearing, and manual and finger dexterity. Must be able to frequently climbing scaffolds, masts, and in and out of confined spaces and tanks. Must be able to regularly lift/carry up to 50 lbs. unassisted and between 50- 100 lbs. assisted. Must have colored vision. Must be able to correctly follow roping and tying techniques. Must maintain general safety awareness by hearing warning signals, reading and comprehending safety instructions, and avoid hazards commonly present in an employee's work area.

Marginal Job Tasks

Perform housekeeping, including sweeping, in all work areas. Attend safety, quality and/or process improvement meetings as required.

Environmental Factors

Exposure to fumes, odors, dust, gases, various climates and temperatures, and low ventilation conditions, all of which may cause discomfort and/or respiratory difficulties. Exposure to constantly moving machines and mechanical parts and high levels of constant noise.

PAYSCALE

$30.15 - $33.16

This pay range is a reasonable estimate of the hourly range for this role. It takes into account the wide range of factors considered in making compensation decisions; including but not limited to skill sets, experience, training, and education.
