Summary of Position

The Office of Community, Equity and Diversity oversees and advances UNH’s strategies for institutional inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility (IDEA). It promotes sustainable organizational change and accountability, builds capacity, develops partnerships, offers guidance and consultation, and facilitates shared responsibility for creating an anti-racist, inclusive, and accessible campus where sense of belonging is fostered for all constituents.

Reporting to the Chief Diversity Officer – Associate Vice President for the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (AVP) and in direct consultation with the AVP, the Assistant Director of OCED will provide collaborative leadership in the development, planning, implementation, and execution of programs, trainings, and events to promote UNH’s overall diversity and inclusion strategic objectives. The assistant director serves as a resource across UNH’s three campuses to address related IDEA concerns, build community, and help foster inclusive practices.
This position involves strong collaboration with campus units to help implement initiatives that address barriers to success for a variety of campus constituents. Characteristic duties include designing and facilitating trainings, workshops, and intellectual exchanges that directly educate internal and external community members in order to build awareness, capacity for understanding, ally-ship, and an improved campus climate for all; utilizing assessment data to measure efficacy of programs and identify campus needs; assisting with IDEA strategic planning and initiatives; supervision of one professional staff and student interns where relevant, and other duties as assigned.

Although primarily situated on the Durham campus, this position will have occasional presence at the Concord and Manchester campuses. Some evenings and weekends are required.

  • At least 2.5 years spent progressively building a background in IDEA, preferably in an academic setting.
  • Experience in advancing programs and services to identify issues for multicultural, LGBTQIA+, and otherwise diverse populations in a university setting.
  • Experience in planning, implementation and assessment of programs.
  • Demonstrated problem solving, project planning and implementation skills.
  • Proven ability to research and prepare documents, reports, and summaries for community consumption.
  • Strong in-person and virtual presentation skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive issues that require discretion and confidentiality.
  • Able to foster relationships with co-workers, university stakeholders, and others to advance institutional IDEA.
  • Strong understanding/expertise in working with issues faced by historically marginalized faculty, staff, and students.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, diplomacy, political savvy, and sensitivity to engage effectively with all constituencies.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with assessment strategies to evaluate effectiveness of programs and services.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage concurrent priorities.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the development, creation and production of promotional materials and other marketing efforts for office events and programs.
  • Experience with website design/digital content creation.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and regional politics and relevant IDEA statutes.
