Job Description

The Lab Technician will provide technical assistance in structural laboratory activities involving civil engineering tests, hands-on activities, and testing of materials. The primary focus is with faculty whose research involves building and testing concrete specimens. Duties will include preparation and testing under the direction of a Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences (CEEES) faculty member, but will also require some initiative in the design and modification of experiments. The technician will assist with curricular civil engineering lab sessions, support extracurricular student activities, provide practical support for graduate research within CEEES, and perform other tasks relevant to laboratory and CEEES operations. Specific responsibilities will include:

  • Specimen fabrication (e.g., mixing and pouring concrete) and disposal of materials
  • Laboratory set-up construction/assembly, moving, bolting, installing, overhead crane, forklift, truck operations, much of which includes working at height.
  • Materials fabrication, drilling, cutting, milling, carpentry, painting
  • Assist classes involving civil engineering laboratory activities such as CE Materials, Build-Break-Perfect, Geotechnical Engineering, Hydraulics, RC Design
  • Assist with the training/educating of undergraduate students with hands-on activities such as Steel Bridge, Concrete Canoe, Big Beam, and Engineers without Borders
  • Clean and maintain CE laboratories, vehicle inspections, equipment upkeep, maintenance, storage, ordering supplies, completing expense reports
  • Satisfy University and OSHA safety requirements

Minimum Qualifications

Machining, fabrication, steel erection, carpentry, hydraulics, forklift operation; overhead crane experience; instrumentation experience is a plus. Ability to drive a vehicle to dispose of concrete or pick up supplies is necessary, as well as ability to drive a flatbed truck (CDL not required).

Physical requirements involve lifting a maximum of 50 lbs., climbing ladders and scaffolding, and working at height. Flexibility, innovation, and willingness to learn. Ability to multi-task and be a positive team player.

Must be able to work in an environment that includes noise, heat, cold, dust, and dirt, and work at height on scaffolding and ladders.

Preferred Qualifications

Welding and woodworking experience preferred.
