Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED.
Experience:
Four years progressively responsible experience in the air conditioning/refrigeration trade.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- General knowledge of the principles of air conditioning and refrigeration.
- Knowledge of the practices and techniques used in the installation, repair and maintenance of HVAC equipment and systems.
- Knowledge of refrigerant types, environmental impact, and gas reclamation procedures and equipment.
- Working knowledge of OSHA regulations related to the refrigeration trade and of National Electric Code.
- Basic mathematics including area, volume, and weights and the practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
- Skill in the use and maintenance of the tools and equipment of the trade.
- Skill in welding, brazing, soldering, and silfoss.
- Skill in repairing and servicing HVAC equipment and systems.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, drawings, specifications, and construction documents.
- Ability to read and understand manufacturer’s recommendations regarding scheduled and preventive maintenance, servicing, and operation.
- Ability to use computers and related software to diagnose HVAC system problems.
- Ability to prepare reports; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery.
- Ability to work at heights up to 35 feet; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools and supplies and/or exert force up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on machinery or equipment.
- Ability to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather or temperature conditions.
- Ability to wear and work in personal protective equipment.
Preferences:
- General knowledge of HVAC trade, including air conditioning, temperature control, plumbing and steam fitting.
- Ability to perform the repairs and maintenance activities outlined above, including soldering and brazing of copper tubing; must be able to troubleshoot electrical circuits utilizing electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
- Basic knowledge of building automation systems (BAS).
- Able to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
- Basic computer keyboarding skills/
- Proficient in the use of e-mail and basic hand-held electronic devices for work management applications.
- A valid HVAC mechanic’s license from the State of MD and, knowledge of NEC is desired.
Additional Certifications:
- Must possess and maintain a valid Class “C” driver’s license with fewer than 6 points.
- As a condition of employment, the incumbent must have or obtain within 4 months of hire date, Levels I and II CFC Certification as required by the EPA. The university will not pay for the training or the examination fee, however, reasonable release time for training will be made available.
Additional Information:
- Work schedule is 7:00 am to 3:30 pm Monday through Friday.
- The HVAC Operations unit participates in the annual HVAC Reflex schedule, which is scheduled coverage on weekends, and holidays when the University is closed. The HVAC Reflex schedule is determined by seniority and established one year in advance.
- Position is Essential and subject to a 24-hour day, 7-day week span of operation.
- Position is not tele-work eligible.
