DESCRIPTION

Under supervision, the incumbent will assist on a multiple research studies within the Department of Psychiatry. Primary responsibilities will include drawing blood from research participants, sample collection tasks will include drawing the participants' blood, processing samples through centrifugation and pipetting, labeling each specimen correctly, as well as safely transporting, storing, and shipping blood samples. The incumbent will follow standard infection control procedures and safety policies and take universal precautionary measures.

The incumbent will also assist in other research-related task including collecting and shipping biological specimens, scheduling of blood draws, and other administrative tasks as needed. Additional responsibilities include administering various assessments (e.g., scales for psychopathology, substance use, cognition, scales of acculturation); coordinating protocol implementation and modifications; ensuring protocol compliance; maintenance of accurate and complete clinical research files; close monitoring of assessments, interventions and on-going activities of the projects; and propose solutions and strategies to resolve any issues that might arise. The incumbent will also assist with scheduling, recruitment, preparation of data for processing, data entry, data extraction, statistical analyses, and other research-related tasks. Data collection will be carried out both in the laboratory and in the field. A strong knowledge of how Alzheimer's disease and related dementias as well as psychotic disorders affect functioning is desired. Training in the responsible conduct of human research will be a requirement for working on this study. Finally, the incumbent will routinely attend research meetings and assist with meeting agendas and minutes. Perform other miscellaneous duties and responsibilities as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be a Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT).

  • Must have a valid CA driver's license and acceptable driving record.

  • Phlebotomy training, certification, and experience, with demonstrated ability to perform venipuncture/phlebotomy on research participants.

  • Experience utilizing a centrifuge to spin blood samples.

  • Knowledge of how to safely and effectively store and transport biological specimen to various locations/laboratories. Knowledge of (and high standards of) laboratory hygiene, biohazard handling, and universal precautions.

  • Proven ability to explain project procedures to apprehensive participants and to ensure their tranquility during the blood drawing process.

  • Proven ability to properly label and sort samples/specimens for storage.

  • Proven ability to attend to detail and excellent organizational skills.

  • Must maintain confidentiality.

  • Proven ability to meet deadlines.

  • Experience collecting, handling, and shipping biological specimens.

  • Must have previous experience in a research setting. Experience working with human subjects and obtaining informed consent.

  • Experience administering detailed behavioral measures.

  • Knowledge of Infection Control protocols and patient comfort/safety.

  • Proven ability to interact constructively with diverse staff members and to communicate technical information accurately.

  • Proven ability to interact constructively with diverse research participant population.

  • Knowledge of how Alzheimer's disease and related dementias as well as psychotic disorders affect functioning.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Possess CPR/BLS Healthcare Provider Certification (Recognized by AHA or equivalent).

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish. Fluency in both languages to obtain informed assent and consent.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

  • Must be willing to work with hazardous materials.

  • Must be able to work various hours (holidays, evenings, and weekends) and locations based on business needs.

  • Must have reliable transportation.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $50,237 - $62,494 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $24.06 - $29.93

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
