DESCRIPTION

UCSD's Department of Dermatology was founded in January 2015 bringing together a team of 70 faculty members specializing in Adult and Pediatric & Adolescent Dermatology, making us one of the largest Dermatology programs in the nation. Our faculty are experts in their fields and are involved in a wide range of clinical, education and research endeavors. UCSD Dermatology has an extensive basic science and clinical research portfolio that allows for substantial funding support from NIH and extramural sources. Dermatology faculties have rich programs of skin research focused on immunology, microbiology, genetics and cancer. They have funded research programs on: 1) studies on the development of the innate immune system and its interaction with the skin microbiome, 2) trials comparing alternative treatments for management of psoriasis, rosacea and atopic dermatitis biologics, 3) studies of biomarkers for acne and acne rosacea, 4) the study of genetics and epigenetics of human skin development and progression to disease, 5) atopic dermatitis inflammation and antimicrobial peptides and 6) skin cancer development and melanoma acquired drug resistance.

Within the Hangauer lab in the UCSD Department of Dermatology, under supervision, the lab assistant will assist with preparation and execution of cancer biology-focused experiments using biological and chemical materials. Tasks will include preparation of standardized media and reagents; upkeep of laboratory apparatus and facilities; ordering and organization of laboratory supplies; record-keeping and organization of experimental outputs on the laboratory computer notebook and databases. The assistant will have an opportunity to perform experiments involving mammalian cell culture, PCR, molecular cloning, and gel electrophoresis.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and one year of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

  • Experience doing standard and routine laboratory tasks.

  • Demonstrated ability to follow written and verbal protocols, techniques, and instructions.

  • Demonstrated organizational skills to order and maintain lab reagents and supplies, and keep accurate lab records and computer files.

  • Demonstrated experience making decisions, analyzing situations, problem solving, and initiating action for laboratory maintenance.

  • Willingness to learn new theory, techniques, and tasks and share knowledge.

  • Skill to accurately organize, store, and retrieve samples, chemicals, and supplies.

  • Experience presenting research results in lab meeting format.

  • Experience writing part or all of submitted or published thesis or research manuscripts.

  • Theoretical knowledge of cell/molecular biology, biochemistry and/or other demonstrated equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Ability to work on weekends to maintain cell or tissue cultures when necessary.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $40,340 - $46,771 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $19.32 - $22.40

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
