Job Description

The Campus Ministry Communications Specialist coordinates communications efforts on behalf of the Division of Student Affairs with a dedicated focus on Campus Ministry, one of the five Units within Student Affairs whose primary purpose is to cultivate and care for the spiritual needs of all students who call Notre Dame home.

Rooted in the Catholic, Holy Cross tradition, Campus Ministry fosters personal spiritual growth, encourages participation in the sacramental and liturgical life of the Church, supports various forms of worship and personal prayer, provides opportunities for pilgrimages, retreats and service, and seeks to enhance and develop lifelong faith formation.

Reporting directly to the Communications Director for the Division of Student Affairs, the Communications Specialist will play a central role in expanding upon existing communications strategies; developing a new Strategic Communications Plan on behalf of Campus Ministry, including the Basilica of the Sacred Heart; and cultivating a robust, engaging, and authentic social media presence to resonate and build relationships with current and potential students. The Communications Specialist is also responsible for the oversight of print, web, and multimedia communication channels; student interns/workers and contracted design work; the creation of in-house print and electronic communications, and the coordination of communications efforts pertaining to Unit programming and events. This position works collaboratively with Campus Ministry staff and an extensive list of campus partners to enhance awareness for the Unit, promoting offerings, resources, and services to students, faculty, staff, campus visitors, the local community, and the wider Church.

Essential duties and responsibilities are as follows:

Communications Development:
  • Work in partnership with the Communications Director for the Division of Student Affairs, the Assistant Vice President for Campus Ministry, and Unit directors to build upon existing communications strategies, and develop a Strategic Communications Plan that complements the strategic plans of the Unit and the Division.
  • Work closely with Campus Ministry colleagues in the development, delivery, and assessment of communications efforts and promotional materials for programs, liturgies, and events to students, faculty, staff, and other internal and external constituencies through existing and emerging communications channels.
Social Media Management:
  • Cultivate a robust, engaging, and authentic social media presence to resonate and build relationships with current and potential students.
  • Serve as the primary social media manager for Campus Ministry and Basilica accounts.
  • Develop and maintain a social media calendar to ensure consistent and strategic content sharing.
  • Create inviting and visually appealing social media content, including graphics and multimedia elements.
  • Execute social media campaigns and initiatives.
Collateral Material Creation and Other Duties:
  • Develop comprehensive communications plans for significant events, outlining communication strategies and channels to effectively reach target audiences.
  • Oversee the ongoing stewardship of the Campus Ministry and Basilica websites, e-newsletter, and existing promotional channels.
  • Write news stories; manage communications work with outside vendors and consultants; hire and manage student workers in the areas of social media and design; and perform regular administrative duties including budgeting, scheduling, and ordering special Unit items.
  • Assist the Communications Director for the Division of Student Affairs and the Assistant Vice President for Campus Ministry with message development regarding internal and external announcements and crisis communications. Additionally, collaborate with other University communicators, including Notre Dame’s Office of Public Affairs and Communications, Notre Dame Studios, the Grotto Network, and other key communications contacts within the University to implement appropriate strategies when necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, or other related fields.
  • At least three years of professional experience in areas such as communications, marketing, public relations, project management, strategic planning, and/or copywriting, preferably in a higher education or Church setting.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the University’s Catholic identity and ability to communicate to and with college students.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills coupled with a proven ability to develop, organize, deploy, and manage multiple priorities, projects, and communications resources.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and executing multi-layered strategic communications plans.
  • Experience and familiarity with various design applications such as Canva and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Experience utilizing email marketing platforms for e-newsletter creation and distribution.
  • Experience in social media strategy and application.
  • Experience with web content management software applications and use.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and tactfully with Student Affairs and Campus Ministry colleagues, University leadership, and other stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, or other related fields.
  • Experience in a Church or ministry setting.
  • Strong design skills and proficiency with graphic design tools.
  • Experience in the development and execution of successful social media campaigns.
