Brown and Caldwell (BC) is seeking an Engineer to join our Technical Services team supporting our Research and Innovation (R&I) and Digital Solutions (DS) teams and in delivering client projects in various technical areas. The ideal candidate will have experience managing research and innovation projects and programs and have experience in digital transformation within the water sector. The successful candidate will apply knowledge of project delivery requirements, business acumen and metrics, project processes, management, resources, tools, and techniques for the purpose of planning, executing, monitoring, and delivering quality to our clients. The ideal candidate will demonstrate leadership, communication mastery, organizational aptitude, problem-solving and the ability to motivate and manage diverse project teams and develop new and existing clients.

This role will be leading, managing, empowering, and overseeing delivery of research and innovation projects that meet objectives and business performance goals for our clients and our company.

Primary duties for this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Client service for water research funding organizations.
  • Support the R&I Director in developing priorities and strategies for pursuit and execution of externally funded research projects.
  • Analyze BC's portfolio of work for external research organizations and identify how to leverage external funding to support Technical Practice priorities and Business.
  • Unit growth priorities, in alignment with Strategic Arenas.
  • Develop a strategy for targeted external research funding organizations including key pursuits, committee involvement, and application of in-kind participation.
  • Lead discussions and bring influence and insights to inform associated project go/no decisions and pursuit strategies for externally funded research projects.
  • Leverage personal client network and engage directly with clients, as needed, to support the sales teams to win strategic R&I pursuits.
  • Track our sales performance for external funding organizations with specific oversight of approximately 10 pursuits per year.
  • Lead "close out" meetings to with R&I project teams to identify BD opportunities & connect to sales/BUs.
  • Partner with Tech Services Product Manager to develop internal and external communications strategy for R&I; refine and utilize R&I performance metrics and storytelling to characterize ROI.
  • Project management for research, innovation, and digital solutions projects.
  • Follow project management practices for the R&I program and DS program and recommend refinements to these processes for greater efficiency and quality.
  • For externally funded R&I projects, execute BC's project delivery requirements, including scope, schedule, budget, quality management, change management, and risk management.
  • Delivery of Project and Business Performance Metrics - be responsible for achieving project performance success through leading the team and meeting the scope, schedule, budget and quality requirements while also accounting for pricing and profitability (where relevant).
  • Client Service and Sales/Marketing Support and Engagement -work closely with client service managers (CSMs), client service teams, and accountable approvers to leverage value of R&I and DS and assess client satisfaction related to these contributions.
  • Support the Directors of R&I and Digital Solutions in implementing strategy and change management including understanding client needs, supporting clients in transitioning to adoption of innovative approaches, and helping BU leaders and CSMs understand and adopt innovation where appropriate.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • BS degree in Civil, Environmental, or related Engineering field; MS and/or MBA degree preferred.
  • 12+ years of experience in the water sector with progressively increasing responsibility.
  • PE or equivalent licensing or ability to obtain within an agreed upon period.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI) preferred.
  • Strong project management and leadership skills.
  • Previously proven and successful project management experience as the lead.
  • Proficiency in change management processes and systems.
  • Experience managing a portfolio of $5 million in research and innovation projects and programs.
  • Experience developing a strategy for a new area of service or research.
  • Expertise in research funding organizations in the water sector (e.g. Water Research Foundation, Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Energy, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation).
  • Connections to academic researchers in the water sector.
  • Broad network of municipal and private sector organizations within the water sector.
  • Experience in digital transformation within the water sector, internet of things (IoT), data analytics.
  • Ability to identify and mitigate risks on projects.
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to communicate orally and in writing - across functions and teams, up and down the chain of command.
  • Proficient in contract terms and execution.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Successful marketing, proposal writing, proposal management, and public presentations experience required.
  • Ability to proactively deal with conflict.
  • Proficient in using standard computer programs (MS Word, MS Teams, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, Outlook) required.
  • Proficient in schedule development and management utilizing MS Project Scheduling tools and software.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to conduct effective presentations and written report preparation.
  • Strong interpersonal communications and experience leading through influence.
  • Strength in empowering team members, resolving conflict, celebrating successes, and providing and receiving feedback.
  • Notable strength in integrity, trust building, team mentality, transparency, inclusivity, and personal growth mindset.
  • Previous mentoring experiencea plus.

Salary Range:Theanticipatedstarting payrange for this position is based on the employee's primary work location and maybemore or lessdependingupon skills, experience,and education. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Location A: $127,000 - $174,000
Location B: $140,000 - $191,000
Location C: $152,000 - $208,000
