Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The University of Maryland Department of Transportation Services (DOTS) is searching for a Communications and Outreach Coordinator. The ideal candidate is an outgoing, proactive, and enthusiastic individual who is responsible for communicating transportation information to the UMD campus community through written content, outreach events, and managing departmental social media accounts. This ideal candidate will be able to quickly become an expert in all of DOTS various services and policies.

This position manages email distribution lists, writes informational emails, and generates them through email marketing software. The Communications and Outreach Coordinator works with individuals within the department and other campus departments to provide updated and accurate written transportation information for publications, websites, and presentations. The Communications and Outreach Coordinator manages the department’s text alert system and an announcement calendar.

This role manages an editorial calendar and all departmental social media accounts. The position identifies relevant content topics to reach the UMD community, and creates and shares this content through DOTS newsletters and social media; monitor, listens and responds to social media users with departmental voice; develops and expands community outreach efforts; analyzes key metrics, adjusts strategy as needed and compiles reports for showing results.

This position supports the marketing and communications efforts of the department by helping draft FAQs and talking points, and staffing university and departmental events. This position knows the ins and outs of all departmental operations, policies and procedures and is able to communicate them clearly.

The Communications and Outreach Coordinator makes presentations to student and employee groups that are engaging and informative. This position is entrusted with advancing the mission of DOTS through the cultivation and maintenance of strong campus and community relationships.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credit being equivalent to one year of experience.

Experience:
  •  0 -2 years of relevant work experience in Communications, Social Media, and/or Outreach/Engagement.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated ability to independently handle multiple tasks and set priorities in a high-paced environment.
  • Expert English grammar, spelling, and punctuation knowledge and extraordinary attention to detail when composing, proofreading, and editing correspondence, reports, and other written materials.
  • Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with internal and external partners.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines and changing priorities.
  • Ability to deliver engaging presentations to large and small audiences at all levels of an organization.
  • Strong knowledge of best practices and strategies in digital marketing, communications, content strategy, and social media.
  • Outstanding organizational and planning abilities.
  • Expert-level proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Experience working with the collegiate demographic.
  • Experience in using design programs such as Adobe or Canva.
  • Experience using a website content management system.
  • Knowledge of AP Style.

Additional Information:

Salary Range: Mid $50,000 – Low $60,000 commensurate with experience.
