General Summary

The Odessa College Music Program is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Band Director to provide leadership, instruction, and mentorship to students in the Concert Band, Jazz Band, and Pep Band. The Band Director will be responsible for fostering musical growth, ensuring high-performance standards, and promoting a culture of excellence in instrumental music within the college community.

Specific Position Duties

1. Instruction and Leadership:
· Teach the equivalent of the standard faculty teaching load of 18 semester credit hours (SCH) for the fall and spring semesters.
· Direct and instruct the Concert Band, Jazz Band, Chamber Ensemble, and Pep Band, ensuring high-quality performances and promoting musical growth.
· Plan, schedule, and conduct regular rehearsals in preparation for concerts, games, and events.
· Provide one-on-one mentorship and guidance to students, helping them improve technical and expressive skills.
2. Repertoire Selection and Event Planning:
· Choose appropriate and varied repertoire for each ensemble, considering the skill level of the musicians, educational outcomes, and audience appeal.
· Arrange concerts, performances, and other events, coordinating with campus facilities and outside venues when necessary.
· Coordinate with sports and other departments for scheduling and logistics related to pep band performances at basketball games.
3. Campus Events Coordination:
· Work closely with campus event organizers to provide music and performance support, ensuring the timely selection, preparation, and delivery of suitable music.
· Collaborate with other departments and faculty to integrate music into interdisciplinary events and projects.
4. . Administrative and Ancillary Tasks:
· Manage the inventory, maintenance, and purchase of instruments, equipment, and sheet music.
· Assist in the recruitment of new students for the Music Department, working closely with Admissions and Outreach teams.
· Stay updated with the latest trends, literature, and best practices in instrumental music education.
· Participate in department meetings, serve on relevant committees, and contribute to the overall advancement of the Music Department.
· Serve as the representative to affiliated partners such as the National Association of Schools of Music, as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

· Master’s degree in Music, Music Education, or related field.
· A minimum of 3-5 years of successful experience in directing bands at the college level or equivalent.
· Strong knowledge of band repertoire across various genres, including classical, jazz, contemporary, and more.
· Demonstrated ability in concert programming and event planning.
· Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with students, faculty, staff, and the community.
· Proficiency in score reading, analysis, and instrumental techniques.
