A postdoctoral position is available in the lab of Dr. Gurkar at the Aging Institute in the Department of Medicine. The Postdoctoral Associate will work on understanding the role of DNA damage and cellular senescence in the cardiac unit. This position requires knowledge of cardiac metabolism and in-depth technical knowledge of induced pluripotent stem cell-derived- cardiomyocytes (iPSC-CM). Tasks in this position may include organizing, implementing, and analyzing data collected from experiments involving live human cells, explanted animal tissue, and in vivo live animal studies. It may also include the development of research methodology and animal protocols, as well as writing reports that contain descriptive, analytical, and evaluative content.

The lab utilizes multiple methods including genetics, -omic approaches, protein biochemistry, and drug intervention techniques. This is an excellent opportunity for creative, motivated individuals to make seminal contributions to the field of cardiac aging biology. The incumbent will be expected to lead an independent project in one of these or related areas.

Qualifications

The candidate must have a recently awarded Ph.D. degree in a science-related field such as Molecular Biology or Cell Biology (within the last five years), an MD degree (within the last ten years), or an equivalent doctorate degree (e.g., ScD, DVM, etc.) upon initial appointment at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh Postdoctoral Associate guidelines apply. The successful candidate(s) will have effective written and verbal English communication skills, along with experience in cell culture, iPSC, molecular and biochemical assays, and studies involving small animals. Experience with mouse models, animal physiology, or CRISPR-based gene editing is desirable. Eligibility to apply for NIH Training Grants would also be a distinct advantage.
