GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION:

 

The instructor will lead college-level courses in the Interpreter Training program. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to student advising, maintaining office hours, participating in college committees, promoting and supporting the department's mission and goals, curriculum design and program development, extra-curricular activities, participating in professional development activities, working across departments to develop student communication, computation, and problem-solving skills. Faculty are expected to accept courses as assigned which could include non-traditional venues, such as evening, weekend, dual-credit, and/or online courses. This position reports to the Program Director of Interpreter Training and exercises no supervision.

NOTE: This is a security sensitive position and an appropriate background investigation will be made on applicants being strongly considered for this position.


SELECTION CRITERIA:

  • Attach a brief statement addressing how you acquired each of the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities through your education, personal experience or previous employment.

Knowledge of: 1. ASL, Interpreting, and Deaf culture subject matter. 2. Role and responsibilities of interpreters. 3. NAD-RID Code of professional conduct. 4. Laws and regulations related to the rights of deaf persons (such as ADA, Section 504). 5. Teaching methodology. 6. Curriculum Development and program planning. 7. Teaching at the postsecondary level. 8. Use of technology in support of instruction. 9. Evaluation of student performance. 10. Promote and support related extra-curricular activities. 11. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. 12. Communicate clearly and concisely in ASL and English. 13. Advise students. 14. Participate in college committees. 15. Organize for deadlines. 16. Prepare and analyze reports.

 
WORKING CONDITIONS:

Occasional field trips. Sustained posture or intense attentiveness for prolonged periods. Light lifting (less than 30 lbs,). Walking, pushing, pulling on a regular basis. Work environment-Minimal hazard/exposure: Standard office setting. At least minimal environmental controls to assure health and comfort.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Master’s Degree in American Sign Language (ASL) or Interpreting, or in a related field from an accredited college or university, with a minimum of 18 graduate hours related to ASL and/or Interpreting.

Experience: At least three years of current work experience in the field of interpreting and/or training interpreters. Experience teaching and/or mentoring adult learners regarding ASL or interpreting.

Certifications: Interpreter Certification: BEI, RID, or other recognized accrediting entities.
