Hazardous Waste Technician

If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL.
We are seeking a Hazardous Waste Technician to help APL identify and dispose or recycle all regulated wastes in an environmentally friendly manner. As a member of our team, you will work with variety of Lab staff who conduct groundbreaking research aimed at providing solutions to critical challenges facing our nation.
As a Hazardous Waste Technician...
- Your primary responsibility will be to collect, transport, segregate, and prepare regulated wastes for offsite disposal or recycling
- You will verify hazardous waste determinations made by the waste generator
- You will work with the hazardous waste disposal contractors to develop hazardous waste profiles and to coordinate shipment dates
- You will ensure that the Main Accumulation Areas (MAAs) are maintained in accordance with all regulatory and policy requirements
- You will maintain records of all waste streams from pick-up through shipment
- You will generate timely billing chargebacks to waste generators
- You will guide and collaborate with staff members who support the regulated waste management program
- You will evaluate options for recycling regulated materials to minimize disposal
- You will support additional Environmental/Health/Safety activities, as needed
Qualifications
You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...
- Possess a High School Diploma (or GED)
- Have demonstrated experience working with chemicals, hazardous materials, or waste streams
- Are knowledgeable about chemical handling, chemical safety, and use of personal protective equipment
- Are willing and able to wear a respirator, lift items up to 50 lbs, move heavy materials (including 55-gallon drums), use hand tools and power tools, and operate a forklift and a pallet jack
- Possess a valid driver's license in good standing with the Motor Vehicle Administration/Department of Motor Vehicles

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...
- Have specific experience leading a regulated waste program
- Certified Hazardous Materials Practitioner (CHMP) or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)
- Have completed RCRA and DOT Hazardous Materials Training
- Possess an Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in a chemistry related area
