Essential Job Duties

The NC State College Advising Corps (CAC) is an AmeriCorps college access program that aims to increase the postsecondary enrollment for low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented students in North Carolina. NC State CAC recruits recent college graduates to serve as “near peer” AmeriCorps college advisers in under-resourced high schools across the state. Our program is dedicated to closing the gap in college attainment and ensuring all North Carolina students have access to educational pathways beyond high school.
Essential Job Duties
  • AmeriCorps College Advisers serve in a partner high school to increase the postsecondary enrollment among all students. College advisers:
  • Provide one-on-one admissions and financial aid advising to any student or family seeking assistance
  • Organize group events that encourage students and their families to consider, plan for, and apply to colleges and universities
  • Establish productive and strategic relationships with principals, counselors, and teachers within the partner school
  • Enhance visibility of the role through school and community outreach
  • Document and analyze student interactions to assist in the assessment and long-term sustainability of the program
  • Maintain expertise in admissions and financial aid advising
Returning AmeriCorps college advisers play an important role in the leadership and knowledge transfer of our program. They take on increased responsibility, including leading some training sessions for all college advisers, leading college adviser committees, and mentoring new college advisers. Returning college advisers receive additional compensation for their increased responsibilities.

Additional details.
AmeriCorps College Advisers:
  • Report to NC State-based program staff, as well as a high school-based onsite supervisors
  • Participate in paid training during the summer and ongoing position-related training throughout the program year
  • Participate in ongoing personal professional development throughout the program year
  • Commit to one academic year (11 months) of service with a preferred two-year commitment if mutually agreed upon by the program staff and the college adviser.
  • Must be able to relocate to the service area and be involved in the surrounding community

Work Schedule

Monday – Friday. Daily work hours follow the partner high school's expected schedule for faculty and staff.

Other Work/Responsibilities

The College Adviser position is an AmeriCorps position which requires 1700 hours of service and includes a commitment to participate in national days of service and additional responsibilities if called upon. The 1700 hours is fully integrated in the day-to-day responsibilities of the position.

Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree completed within approximately four years of service (see Purpose section regarding our near-peer model). All majors considered.
