Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Auto Service Technician performs automotive work at the advanced level. An Auto Service Technician should have demonstrated experience performing highly skilled work requiring the use of computer diagnostic equipment in the maintenance and repair of a variety of gasoline and diesel powered motor vehicles, transit buses, and equipment. Experience servicing medium and heavy-duty commercial passenger transit is a plus.

This role will be responsible for advanced level tasks in the repair of computerized, mechanical, and electrical systems as well as diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing vehicles, automotive systems, and related equipment.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Perform repair and routine maintenance (A, B, C, and D service, seasonal service, DOT inspections, preventative maintenance inspections) on light, medium and heavy duty, gasoline and diesel vehicles.
  • Inspects and tests vehicles, automotive systems and related equipment.
  • Diagnoses malfunctions with air brake, hydraulic and electrical systems; diesel engines and transmissions and makes repairs including welding and fabrication, replacement and assemblage of parts.
  • Tune and adjust both 2 and 4 cycle gasoline and diesel engines of automotive and heavy-duty transit buses.
  • Performs work using accepted techniques and available equipment, parts and supplies. This may involve experience with O/I communications systems and ability to diagnose problems using computer equipment to interface with Electronic Control Units. (ECU’s).
  • Performs preventative maintenance such as fueling, oil changing and lubrication and cleaning. Document all maintenance work using appropriate forms.
  • Record all parts used, labor hours and vehicle scheduling.
  • Maintains tools and equipment of the automotive trade and assists in maintaining an orderly maintenance area by cleaning up after each job and keeping tools and parts organized.
  • Participate in on-call rotation for emergency maintenance response.
  • May also be asked to participate in the training of student maintenance assistants and incoming technicians.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience
Five years progressively responsible experience in servicing, maintenance, and repair of motor vehicles or motor equipment.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Comprehensive knowledge of and skill in applying the principles of operation, basic components, malfunctions, repair practices and preventive maintenance techniques for internal combustion engines including mechanical and computer controlled diesel and motor vehicle systems and sub-assemblies.
  • Thorough knowledge of the procedures, methods, tools, materials, supplies, and technical manuals used in servicing, maintaining, repairing and adjusting automotive equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of the proper use, care and maintenance of standard hand and power tools. 
  • Skill in the proper use and maintenance of the tools and equipment of the automotive trade and in preparing estimates of time and materials required for a job. 
  • Skill in and ability to diagnose and correct motor vehicle malfunctions.
  • Ability to read, understand and carry out oral and written instructions; to keep accurate records and make written reports; to communicate effectively; to work in, on, around, under and over machinery and/or fixed equipment; to work at heights of up to 25 feet; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools and supplies; to exert force up to 70 lbs.; to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on machinery and equipment; to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather or temperature conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.

Other:
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

  • Employees in this job class must possess and maintain the required driver’s license with no more than five (5) points.
  • Must have a valid Maryland commercial driver’s license (CDL) with a Passenger & Air Brakes endorsement or have the ability to obtain one within six months of employment.
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications preferred.

Additional Information:

  • Work week: Monday–Friday; Hours: 6:30 AM – 3:00 PM
  • Participate in on-call rotation for emergency maintenance response, be available to work some occasional overtime on a Saturday or Sunday and participate in a rotating Sunday through Thursday shift which happens about twice a semester.
  • Candidates selected for employment may be subject to medical inquiries and/or medical examinations to determine ability to perform the job. Employees in this job class must maintain the required driver’s license with no more than 5 points and will be subjected to drug and alcohol education and testing as required under Federal Highway Administration and the State of Maryland regulations. Employees in this job class will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. 
  • Weekend work required.
  • Must have own basic set of metric and standard mechanic tools and tool box to be kept on Shuttle premises.

Physical Demands

  • You spend much of your day on your feet or in uncomfortable positions when completing repairs. You also typically work routinely with tools and greasy car parts and often wearing on your hands and arms.
  • Works in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, adverse weather or temperature conditions. Works in heights up to 25 feet and exerts force up to 70 lbs. Must wear and work in personal protective equipment.
